Roger Federer Will Play At 2017 Rogers Cup Montreal

Roger Federer, the former world number 1 and future hall of famer has confirmed that he will take part in the 2017 Rogers Cup. Federer last appearance in the Rogers Cup was back in 2014 and this will be the first time that he makes an appearance in Montreal since 2011.

The Rogers Cup alternates its venues between Toronto and Montreal for the Men’s and Women’s Cup each year. The Rogers Cup in Montreal will commence from August 4 and finish on August 13, while the Rogers Cup in Toronto will commence from August 5 and finish on August 13.

The Swiss champion has won two Rogers Cup championships in his career in 2004 and 2006. Both those championship wins were in Toronto as Federer is yet to win a Montreal event.

Tennis fans in Montreal will be thrilled to know that Roger Federer has decided to play in the 2017 Rogers Cup as they will get to see one of the greatest players in the history of the game play in Montreal. There were many who believed that Federer was past his prime and should have retired a couple of years ago, as Federer struggled with injuries and looked way below his best.

However during the last 12 months, Roger Federer has shown that he still has what it takes to beat the best players in the world. He won his 18th Grand Slam this year at the Australian Open and went on to win his 19th Grand Slam after winning his 8th Wimbledon Championship. Federer has also won titles in 2017 at Halle, Miami and Indian Wells.

In a statement, Federer said

I’m happy to be coming back to Montreal, as I have not had the chance to play there for many years. This 2017 season has been very exciting and I am really looking forward to being back on the court on the ATP Tour.

Tennis pros tend to use the Rogers Cup to kick-start their hard court season in the lead up to the US Open which is the final grand slam of the year. The US Open is scheduled to take place later this month and will start on August 28 and finish on 10 September.

Eugene Lapierre, the tournament director for the Rogers Cup said they were celebrating the fact that Federer decided to play in Montreal and would continue to celebrate as Federer will celebrate his 36th birthday on August 8 in Montreal.
