She Recovered After the Second Set

The clay-court match lasted two hours and six minutes, with the fourth-seeded Andreescu recovering after losing the second set to secure the WTA 125 championship.

The victory earned the 26-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario, US$15,500. It also marked another title for a player whose career was once among the most closely watched in women’s tennis before injuries disrupted her progress.

Andreescu made a strong start, taking the opening set 6-1. Maria, the tournament’s top seed, responded in the second, using her experience to turn the match around and win the set 6-2.

The Canadian regained control in the deciding set, holding her nerve to beat the 39-year-old German 6-3 and take the trophy.

Andreescu, who previously reached No. 4 in the world rankings, finished with four aces, six double faults, 65 winners and 48 unforced errors. Maria also recorded four aces and six double faults, but finished with 15 winners and 27 unforced errors.

The Canadian won eight of her 12 service games and six of her 12 return games. She also saved five of the nine break points she faced.

The title run included a semifinal victory over France’s Carole Monnet on Saturday. Andreescu won that match 6-3, 7-5 to reach the final.

Maria advanced by defeating third seed Fiona Ferro, also of France, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Andreescu’s latest victory adds another title to the career of the former world No. 4, who has continued competing after a series of injuries interrupted her rise through the WTA rankings.
