Jets Make Historic Comeback, Beat Canadiens 5-4 in OT

Summary:

  • The Winnipeg Jets scored four goals in just 2:06 to erase a 4-0 deficit and force overtime.
  • Dylan Samberg scored at 3:30 of overtime to secure a 5-4 win against the Montréal Canadiens and end the Jets’ nine-game losing streak.
  • Kyle Connor scored twice, while Cole Caufield also had a two-goal night for Montréal.

The Winnipeg Jets pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in NHL history on Tuesday night, October 3, scoring four goals in the final 2:39 of regulation before beating the Montréal Canadiens 5-4 in overtime.

Samberg Decided the Game in OT

Dylan Samberg scored the decisive goal at 3:30 of overtime, completing a stunning turnaround that ended Winnipeg’s nine-game losing streak.

The Jets had trailed 4-0 early in the third period before scoring four times in just two minutes and six seconds, tying the game with 32 seconds left on the clock.

Latest Four-Goal Rally in NHL History

Kyle Connor was the one to lead the charge with two goals, while Tyrel Bauer and Morgan Barron also contributed to the score during the late surge.

Bauer opened Winnipeg’s comeback with his first career NHL goal, cutting the deficit to 4-1 with 2:39 remaining.

Barron followed 42 seconds later, and Connor then struck twice on one-timers with an extra attacker, just 27 seconds apart, to force overtime.

Samberg finished the job, beating Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler to give Winnipeg a much-needed victory.

The result was particularly significant for the Jets, who entered the game with a 5-8-3 record and were coming off a heavy 7-0 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. That loss had raised questions about head coach Scott Arniel’s position.

Stuart Skinner made 18 saves for Winnipeg, while Fowler who had a shutout against St. Louis managed to stop 42 shots for Montréal this time.

The Canadiens had appeared firmly in control for most of the game. Owen Beck opened the scoring just over three minutes into the first period, before Josh Anderson doubled the lead late in the opening frame.

Cole Caufield then scored twice, including a power-play goal early in the second period, to put Montréal ahead 3-0. His second goal came 46 seconds into the third period, giving him his 10th of the season and extending the lead to four.

Montréal, which entered the game with a 9-3-3 record, had been unbeaten in its previous five games. The defeat was its first in six outings.

Captain Nick Suzuki missed his sixth consecutive game with a hand injury. He had previously played 546 consecutive regular-season games to begin his NHL career, and appears close to returning after practicing without obvious limitations.

Winnipeg will look to build on the dramatic victory when it hosts the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. Montréal will also be at home Thursday, taking on the Utah Mammoth.
