Los Angeles Confirms Deal With IOC To Host 2028 Summer Olympics

Los Angeles 2028The last time the city of Los Angeles hosted the Olympics was back in 1984 when sprinter Carl Lewis won four gold medals and burst on to the scene. Los Angeles was in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2024 Olympics and was facing competition from Paris.

Los Angeles decided to give the 2024 edition to Paris in exchange of hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics. The IOC confirmed that Los Angeles had pledged $1.8 billion to the organizing committee which will help support sports programmes for the youth in the lead up to the games and also to fund the planning committee which will have to make extensive preparations.

Mayor Garcetti said that LA had always been a games changer and they will once again set the bar high and return the Olympic legacy to what it is supposed to be like.

There are a number of cities across the world that are happy to bid for the Olympics but the IOC has to carefully consider the pros and cons before finalizing a host venue. This is because it takes an enormous sum of money to prepare for the Olympics and there are always financial constraints that can jeopardize the quality of the games. Los Angeles has always maintained that the 1984 Olympics brought the city a lot of emotional and financial success.

The chairman of the LA bid committee, Casey Wasserman termed the opportunity as unprecedented and was thrilled that Los Angeles had 11 years to prepare for the games. The IOC is expected to make an official announcement on September 13 and will provide the city of Los Angeles with a minimum of $1.8 billion. The IOC will also give the city advance payments of $160 million for the youth sports program and an additional $180 million to compensate the local committee for the additional four years that they will have to work.

The United States Olympic Committee and the Los Angeles City Council are expected to review the agreement in August and if everything is okay will then send it across to the IOC for a vote which will take place in September.
