MMA Fans Make Their Way This Weekend To UFC 215, Edmonton

Die hard MMA fans in Canada will be making their way to Edmonton to witness UFC 215 which takes place on September 9 at Rogers Place. The UFC has been busy in July and August with the Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing promotion and as a result has slacked off in its promotion of UFC 215.

UFC 215 will be headlined by Demetrious Johnson vs. Ray Borg for the UFC flyweight belt and the co-main event will see UFC Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes defend her belt against number one contender Valentina Shevchenko. There are a total of 12 fights scheduled for UFC 215 and it will commence with the early prelims which starts at 6.30 pm EST.

The FS1 prelims will start at 8 pm EST and the Main Card which has a total of 5 fights will start at 10 pm EST. Apart from the Main Event and Co-Main event, the Main Card will feature Jeremy Stephens vs. Gilbert Melendez, Ilir Latifi vs. Tyson Pedro and Rafael dos Anjos vs. Neil Magny.

The UFC 215 fight card is good but not great considering the fact that the UFC has made it a habit in 2017 to stack its cards and give fans a number of exciting fights on the same night. One of the reasons this card is weak is because the UFC had scheduled a fight between former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos (JDS) and the young and exciting Francis Ngannou.

However the fight was cancelled after USADA flagged JDS for a potential anti-doping violation and the UFC was not able to find someone to take JDS’s place in the short period of time.

The UFC has also not promoted UFC 215 aggressively and one of the reasons is because UFC President Dana White isn’t exactly thrilled about the Main Event. White made it clear that he wasn’t very happy with Demetrious Johnson declining a fight with TJ Dillashaw and insisting to fight Ray Borg. White believes the fans wanted to see Johnson vs. Dillashaw and it would have helped sell more pay-per- views in comparison to Johnson vs. Borg.

White was also not happy with Amanda Nunes after she pulled out of a UFC 213 Main Event fight with Shevchenko and gave the promotion less than 24 hours notice. He promised that she would not Main Event again and scheduled them as the co-main event at UFC 215. Canadian fans will be hoping that they get to see exciting fights and get their money’s worth come September 9!
