  • CF Montréal signed controversial Sandro Grande as their U23 coach
  • Public backlash erupts on social media over Grande’s tweet from 2012
  • CF Montréal terminate contract and admit they made a mistake in signing Grande

CF Montréal which is a part of Major League Soccer (MLS) were on the lookout for a new U23 coach and after going through a few shortlisted candidates, decided that their best choice was Sandro Grande.

Grande was born in Montréal, Canada and represented Canada in the past. The 45 year old has a colourful past but Gabriel Gervais, CEO and President for CF Montréal decided that Grande was the right man for the job and went ahead and signed him.

Social Media Backlash Over Grande Signing

CF Montréal announced on Jan 10 that Grande would be joining the franchise to take up the U23 coach role. The announcement caused an immediate backlash on social media from fans and the political circle who slammed CF Montréal for associating with Grande.

One of the main reasons for the backlash is due to a tweet that Grande posted in 2012. The tweet was made on the night of the Quebec election shooting in 2012, where Parti Québécois had gathered along with their head Pauline Marois.

The shooter had tried to get Pauline Marois but missed and instead killed technician Denis Blanchette while causing a serious injury to another technician David Courage.

Grande tweeted after the shooting

The only mistake the shooter made last night was to miss his target!!! Marois!!! Next time buddy! Hopefully!

Grande has tried to distance himself from those remarks by claiming that his account was hacked at the time but no one believes him.

CF Montréal Drop Grande

CF Montréal was put under tremendous pressure on social media stating that Grande should never have been signed. Gervais told the media that they were aware of Grande’s comments but believe that he had turned a new leaf over the years and wanted to give him a chance.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon who is the current leader of Parti Québécois said it was unconceivable how a team like CF Montréal could hire someone with Grande’s past, pointing out that Grande had made other criminal comments in the past.

CF Montréal yielded to the pressure and terminated Grande’s contract stating that it had made a mistake in signing him, who will CF Montréal turn to as a replacement check the latest odds here.
