The B.C. The Lions’ defense on Sunday was just enough to beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-16 at BC Place Stadium, carrying their winning streak to four games during the current 2026 CFL season.
T.J. Lee Praised Their “Grit Mentality”
Veteran defensive back T. J. Lee commented on the result, explaining that the Lions entered the matchup knowing they would need an aggressive approach against the defending Grey Cup champions.
Having a grit mentality. Taking the initiative to pick the ball off, being aggressive-minded. Studying film, working together and collaborating.
The Lions defense delivered well, forcing a number of critical turnovers and repeatedly disrupting Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris.
Lee and Stantley Thomas-Oliver each intercepted Harris, while defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin recorded two sacks. Defensive tackle Casey Sayles added another sack as the Lions consistently pressured the Saskatchewan passing game.
Coach Pierce: “It’s a Group That’s Hungry to Be Great”
Mauldin, who came out of retirement last month to join B.C., said the defensive front focused on preventing Harris from stepping up in the pocket.
Our biggest thing with the front seven was putting pressure on Trevor Harris. He likes to get the ball out quick, so we need to be able to collapse the pocket.
B.C. head coach Buck Pierce praised his defense for remaining composed after making big plays.
One of the best things about them is they’re able to stay in the moment, refocus after a big play. It’s a group that’s hungry to be great.
Quarterback Nathan Rourke completed 22 of 28 passes for 355 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He connected with Jevon Cottoy for a 23-yard touchdown and Keon Hatcher Sr. for a four-yard score.
Running back Zander Horvath added a one-yard touchdown run, his seventh touchdown in the last four games and sixth rushing score during that stretch.
Cottoy was Rourke’s leading target, finishing with six receptions for 110 yards. Stanley Berryhill also produced a crucial play, making a spectacular catch between two Saskatchewan defenders before taking a hit and turning it into a 58-yard gain.
Rourke credited the defense for the victory but admitted he was not satisfied with his own performance.
Our defense is playing incredible.I think we owe this one to them. I just feel like I’ve got to be better in this stretch.
Sean Whyte converted field goals from 25, 35 and 44 yards as B.C. improved to 5-5 and moved into a tie for third place with Winnipeg in the CFL West Division.
Saskatchewan, meanwhile, dropped to 6-4 after its second straight defeat. Harris finished 28 of 42 for 356 yards and one touchdown, but his two interceptions proved costly.
Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace said
Turnovers hurt us. We’ve just got to protect the football a little bit better on offence and continue to push to find ways to get it back for us.
The Roughriders will host the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday, August 29, while the Lions will travel to face the Ottawa Redblacks on Sunday, August 30.
