Baltimore Orioles Trade Manny Machado to Los Angeles Dodgers

Manny Machado has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 5 player deal

The Baltimore Orioles have traded Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers it was announced on Wednesday. The Dodgers won the battle over Machado that saw the highly sought-after shortstop that many were hoping to acquire.

The deal saw Baltimore getting five prospects. This included Rylan Bannon (third baseman), right-handers Dean Kremer and Zach Pop plus Yusniel Diaz (outfielder) and Breyvic Valera (third baseman).

Manny Machado, age 26, is a powerful hitter that offers excellent skills in the field. This trade will vastly improve the Los Angeles Dodgers odds of making it to the World Series this year, and if they do, it will be the second year in a row of doing so. Machado has 24 home runs, earned 65 RBI’s and had a batting average of .315 while with the Baltimore Orioles.

Machado’s contract was set to expire at the completion of this season, and with Baltimore sitting in last place, they chose to trade the star player and maximise the trade value versus re-sign what would have been a multi-year deal, and an expensive one at that.

It is expected that he will make his first appearance with the Dodgers this Friday when they play against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The lead up to the trade saw Machado being approached by multiple clubs hoping to acquire the star shortstop. This includes the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia, Arizona, Milwaukee as well as the Dodgers.

Machado has been to the All-stars four times in his young career and scored 129 home runs during the previous three seasons. Drafted in 2010 by Baltimore, he played his first major league game in 2012 and to date, has only played with the Orioles.

Los Angles was in need to fill the shortstop hole that the club struggled with after losing Corey Seager after surgery in May. The move is a positive step forward in Machado’s professional career as Baltimore has little chances of going to the World Cup, but with the move to Los Angles, he now moves to a team that is in the battle for the pennant. It is expected he will continue to play shortstop for the Dodgers.

For Machado, this is the position he loves and has said in recent interviews that he loves playing shortstop. He added,

“I’m more excited playing shortstop than I’ve ever been. I’m more into the game. This is where I’ve always wanted to be, this is what brings the best player out of me.”

The Dodgers have been using Chris Taylor as their main shortstop, his numbers are down, and with the acquiring of Machado, it is most likely that Taylor will be moved to second base to make room for Machado.

After suffering a number of player injuries, Los Angeles will still need to improve its bullpen. This includes finding a solid pitcher to strengthen their pitching lineup before the July 31 deadline.
