Halifax Tides Miss Playoffs After Draw With AFC Toronto

Summary:

  • Saorla Miller scored in the 44th minute, but Halifax could not find a winner in a 1-1 draw with AFC Toronto.
  • The Tides finished fifth with 29 points, two behind Vancouver Rise, who claimed the final playoff spot.
  • Toronto finished third and will face Ottawa Rapid in a two-leg semifinal beginning Saturday, while Vancouver hosts Montreal on Sunday.

The Halifax Tides saw their Northern Super League playoff hopes end on Monday after a 1-1 draw with AFC Toronto left them just short of the final postseason spot.

Saorla Miller scored an equalizer for Halifax before half-time, but the Tides could not find a winner at BMO Field. They needed all three points to overtake Vancouver Rise and claim fourth place in the six-team league.

Hunter Gave Them an Early Advantage

Kaylee Hunter put Toronto ahead in the 28th minute, giving the hosts an early advantage. Saorla Miller responded in the 44th minute to bring Halifax level and keep their playoff hopes alive heading into the second half.

Miller came close to completing the turnaround 10 minutes into the second half, but her shot struck the post. Neither side managed another goal, leaving Halifax to settle for a point when a victory was essential.

The Tides finished the campaign with 29 points from seven wins, 10 defeats and eight draws. That left them fifth in the standings, two points behind Vancouver, who secured the final playoff berth.

Toronto also missed an opportunity to improve its position. A regulation-time victory would have moved AFC Toronto into second place, but the draw left the club third with 39 points. Ottawa Rapid finished second with 40 points, while Montreal Roses topped the table with 45.

Toronto ended the regular season with 10 wins, six losses and nine draws. Despite missing out on second place, the club will now turn its attention to the playoffs, which begin this weekend.

The hosts had the better of Monday’s match statistically, finishing with 52% possession and 19 shots compared with Halifax’s 14. Toronto also recorded six shots on target to the Tides’ four and won 12 of the match’s 19 corner kicks.

What’s Next

The result confirmed the end of Halifax’s postseason campaign, while Calgary Wild finished bottom of the standings with 21 points after five wins, 14 losses and six draws.

The NSL playoffs will feature two-leg semifinals, with the aggregate score across both matches determining which teams advance to the final.

AFC Toronto will host Ottawa Rapid on Saturday in the opening leg of their semifinal. Vancouver Rise will welcome Montreal Roses on Sunday as the other two contenders begin their battle for a place in the championship match.

The successful teams will then proceed to advance to the 2026 NSL Final where they will compete for the Diana B. Matheson Cup.

For Halifax, the late push for a playoff place ultimately fell short. Miller’s equalizer offered a glimpse of hope, but the Tides could not find the decisive goal needed to extend their season.
