USA Crash Out Of WWC 2023 After Losing Penalty Shootout

USA crash out of the Women's World Cup 2023 against Sweden on penalties

Summary

  • Defending champions USA have been eliminated from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
  • USA lost a penalty shootout to Sweden to end their chance of winning three consecutive World Cups
  • USA have followed Canada who was eliminated in the Group Stage

The United States and Canada went into the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as big favorites to win the World Cup.

The U.S were the defending champions and looking to win their third consecutive World Cup while Team Canada were the 2020 Olympic champions who wanted to prove that they could beat their North American neighbours and become World Champions.

USA Follow Canada Out Of The Tournament

Team Canada was eliminated in the group stages after losing a do or die match against co-hosts Australia were they went down 4-0. Lots of Canadian football fans then threw their support behind the United States but were also let down as the United States suffered a loss against Sweden in Melbourne on 06 Aug.

Team USA will be kicking themselves for making critical errors that ended up costing them the game against Sweden. They should not have allowed the game to get to penalties as they had 58 percent of ball possession compared to Sweden who had 42 percent. The U.S also had 22 shots on goal but their accuracy was terrible with only 11 shots on target.

The U.S also ended up getting 9 corners to Sweden’s 3 but was still unable to find the back of the net. Sweden played well defensively as they managed to thwart the U.S and push them into a penalty shootout. Sweden ended up winning the penalty shootout 5-4 after Megan Rapinoe failed to send the U.S crashing out!

Team Canada Calls For Big Changes

Since Canada was eliminated from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, there have been calls from the women’s football team for big changes to be made from Canada Soccer. Christine Sinclair, who captained Canada at the World Cup said that other teams will not only reach the level of Team Canada but then go on to become even better, if Canada Soccer continues to neglect women’s football.

There is a push to get a professional football league for women established in Canada and for more financial support to flow in towards the national team for youth.
