It’s official: The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to trade veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for prospects Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene.

One of Jays’ Most Consistent Pitchers

The deal comes amid Toronto’s roster-reshaping process, ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline. The Blue Jays sit at 52- 60, trailing in both the American League East and the Wild Card race, making the organization shift its attention toward building for the future.

Gausman came to Toronto prior to the 2022 season, after inking a five-year contract worth 110 million dollars. Throughout the last five seasons, he managed to establish himself as one of the club’s most consistent starting pitchers, quickly turning into a fan favorite.

Despite a shaky final season with the Jays, Gausman leaves behind an undeniably strong legacy, with a 4- 10 record featuring a 4.51 ERA and striking out 123 batters across 121.2 innings in 2026.

His best individual campaign came three years ago, when he earned his second All-Star selection in his career and finished third in American League Cy Young Award voting after emerging as one of baseball’s elite starters.

Many Toronto supporters, however, will remember Gausman most for his postseason performances during the club’s memorable 2025 campaign.

The 35-year-old born in Colorado played a vital role in helping the Blue Jays reach the World Series, delivering several outstanding starts under pressure. 

Highlights include an excellent Game 2 performance against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he surrendered only four hits over 6.2 innings, and another impressive outing in Game 6 when he struck out eight batters across six innings.

For the Cubs, the trade adds an experienced arm with plenty of postseason experience to their rotation as they strengthen their pitching staff for the stretch run.
