Tom Brady Scores his 500th Touchdown and Makes History

Tom Brady embraces receiver Josh Gordon after making his 500th career touchdown pass

A night that was bound to be special, where anticipation was high, Tom Brady knew he had the opportunity to get his 500th career touchdown pass on Thursday as the Patriots took on the Indianapolis Colts.

Brady and the New England Patriots were on a mission to give their celebrated quarterback his special moment. One that once again put him in the history books, and with one pass to his returning buddy Julian Edelman, his 500th came after a pass to Josh Gordon, who joined the Patriots in a trade deal from Cleveland, took it to the end zone and in doing so, gave Brady his 500th.

New England beat the Colts 38-24 on Thursday night in front of a nearly sold-out stadium and earned back-to-back wins. The game was a big night for Gordon who had only played five games over the last three seasons due to suspensions. However, it was Brady’s skill and wealth of experience that saw him spreading out passes and achieving the goal of winning.

Brady, while speaking post-game about Edelman said that they wanted to get the ball to him and he made some great plays. Brady added,

“Just good to have him out there. We all want it to be perfect when we go out, and it was great to have him out there … healthy and having fun.”

As for Brady registering 500 touchdown passes he is now third on the list only behind Brett Favre with 568 and Peyton Manning with 539. Brady said it is an achievement that many people help make saying,

“I think all these things like that, milestones, there are so many people that contribute, all the people that have really worked hard. A quarterback doesn’t throw to himself. These are all great team awards, pretty cool.”

Brady also tied another NFL record by recording his 226th win finishing the game with 341 yards. Brady began his first pass to Edelman who was open for nine yards, and the crowds cheered as Edelman played his first game since the preseason in 2017. Edelman tore up his knee in that game, and it saw him on the injured list and was then suspended by the NFL after testing positive for performance enhancers upon his return in 2018.

Commenting after the game, Edelman said,

“During the rehab you are just sitting there and waiting to get back on the field. It felt great to be out there with the guys.”

It seemed like nothing went right for the Colts, especially after watching Brady gain 72 yards from the Colts 1 yard line. Brady also took the Patriots 68 yards just before the first half ended and led23-3 as the first half came to an end. Indianapolis Colts quarterback, Andrew Luck sent a bad pass that was intercepted by Patrick Chung and increased his record of a touchdown throw in a game to 28 equaling other quarterbacks in the league. Commenting on the game, Luck said,

“We’re not going to win consistently until we learn how to get out of our own way. That’s not taking anything away from New England. They were the better team today. Anybody who watched it or played in it knows it. It was self-evident. But we’re going to have to learn how not to lose if we want to give ourselves a chance to win.”

The New England Patriots next play the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday the 14th and also playing on the 14th, the Indianapolis Colts will face the New York Jets.
