Hughes Scores 500th NHL Point in Return to Vancouver

Summary:

  • Hughes scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another as Minnesota beat Vancouver 4-2.
  • Canucks fans booed Hughes throughout much of his return, despite a more positive response during his tribute video.
  • The former Norris Trophy winner has yet to extend his contract with Minnesota but says he is enjoying his time with the Wild.

Former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes scored his 500th career NHL point in his first game back in Vancouver, assisting the Minnesota Wild in its 4-2 victory on Sunday night despite a hostile reception from many hockey fans at his former home arena.

He Was Booed a Lot

Hughes was booed during warmups and whenever he touched the puck during play. Fans were more receptive during a first-intermission tribute video, mixing cheers with the boos, before the negative reaction resumed.

A “Quinn Hughes sucks” chant could also be heard during the opening period.

The 27-year-old responded in the second period, scoring to extend Minnesota’s lead to 3-0. The goal proved to be the game-winner as the Wild held on for the victory. Hughes also assisted on Minnesota’s fourth goal.

His performance came nearly a year after the Canucks traded him to Minnesota in December, following his indication to then-general manager Patrik Allvin that he did not intend to re-sign with Vancouver when his contract expired at the end of the season.

Hughes spent six and a half seasons with the Canucks, becoming one of the NHL’s leading defencemen. His standout campaign in 2023-24 saw him record 92 points and win the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenceman.

Before Sunday’s game, Hughes said he was grateful for his time in Vancouver and prepared for the possibility of being booed.

Whether I’m booed or whatnot, it won’t change how I feel about that place and how grateful I am for the experiences I had there

He also reflected positively on beginning his career in a Canadian market, describing the experience as special.

An Extension Could Soon Follow

Quinn Hughes has yet to sign a contract extension with Minnesota, but suggested that developments could come soon. He said he was enjoying his time with the Wild and believed the team had the potential to compete for a championship.

The defenceman’s current contract carries a salary cap hit of $7.85 million. He became eligible to sign an extension with Minnesota on July 1.

Hughes has also previously expressed interest in playing alongside his brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes, both of whom are members of the New Jersey Devils.

Hughes entered Sunday’s game with two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 11 appearances this season.

His milestone performance in Vancouver added another memorable chapter to his return, with the Wild leaving town with a win and their star defenceman reaching a major career landmark.
