Summary:
- Canada finished eighth in the women’s team final at the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
- China took first place, followed by the United States with silver and Japan with bronze.
- Canada qualified for the 2027 World Championships in Chengdu, China, where further places at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be decided.
Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team managed to secure a spot at the 2027 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Chengdu, China. The news comes amid an eighth-place finish in the team final at the 2026 championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
They Qualified Seventh and Finished Eighth
The Canadian team, led by four-time Olympian Ellie Black, scored 158.096 points on Wednesday, October 21, finishing last among the eight finalists. Canada had qualified seventh for the final with a score of 160.130.
The team climbed as high as fifth after the uneven bars but struggled on the balance beam in the final rotation. Canada scored 37.866 on the apparatus, with only Italy recording a lower score.
Black, competing at her 10th World Championships, led Canada on the beam with 13.733 points. Lia-Monica Fontaine scored 13.000, while Lia Redick recorded 11.133.
Fontaine, 17, was Canada’s top performer on vault with 14.166 points and also contributed 13.366 on floor exercise. Redick scored 13.300 on floor, the second-highest Canadian result in the event.
Gabrielle Black and Coralie Demers made up the rest of the competing team, while Zoe Tsaprailis served as reserve.
China Grabs First World Title in Two Decades
China finished first with 165.764 points and grabbed gold, ahead of the United States, which scored 165.531. Japan took bronze with 164.063 points.
The victory represented China’s first women’s team world title in the last 20 years and its first gold medal at a major international competition since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. China also earned automatic qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, alongside the other medal-winning teams.
The United States extended its run of consecutive World Championships podium finishes to 13, although the silver medal ended its streak of seven straight titles dating back to 2011.
Japan’s bronze secured the country a five-member artistic gymnastics team at the 2028 Summer Olympics for the first time since 1966.
Race for Olympic Qualification Goes On
Despite the Canadians missing out on an Olympic berth at the Rotterdam event, their qualification for the 2027 World Championships is just enough to keep their campaign on track.
The competition, scheduled for September 29 to October 8 in Chengdu, will offer more chances to secure Olympic places, along with subsequent continental qualification pathways.
Canada enters the next stage after a strong showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Black and her teammates won team silver with a score of 157.300.
Black also won the individual all-around title in Glasgow, adding to her previous Commonwealth all-around victory in 2018. At the 2022 World Championships, she helped Canada win team bronze and claimed silver on balance beam.
Fontaine will also be one to watch after winning vault silver at the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta, becoming the second Canadian woman to earn a world medal in the event.
Canada’s eighth-place finish in Rotterdam leaves work to do, but the team has another major opportunity next year to move closer to the 2028 Olympic Games.
