Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Adds Another MVP to Legacy

Summary:

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned 83 first-place votes to win his second straight MVP
  • He joins an elite list of guards to win back-to-back NBA MVP awards
  • The Thunder star dedicated the honor to family, teammates, and supporters

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added yet another historic chapter to his impressive rise on Sunday, winning his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player award and cementing his place among basketball’s all-time great guards.

Fifth NBA Guard with Back-to-Back MVPs

The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar received 83 first-place votes, finishing ahead of Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama to claim the league’s highest individual honor for a second straight year.

The achievement places Gilgeous-Alexander in rare company, as, before Sunday, only four guards in NBA history had won back-to-back MVP awards: Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Stephen Curry and Steve Nash.

Yet as he stood before teammates, family, and media in Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander made it clear the moment was never just about him.

He spoke emotionally about the sacrifices made by those around him, including his parents, wife, son, coaches, teammates, and close friends who helped shape his journey from a teenager in Hamilton, Ontario to one of the biggest stars in the sport.

“So Many People Sacrificed for Me”

There are so many people in my life who sacrificed for me to play this game. I would be doing them a disservice if I did not give it everything I have.

That mindset has defined his rise. Cut from his school’s sophomore team as a ninth grader, he responded by working relentlessly until he became a four-star recruit, a standout at the University of Kentucky, and eventually the 11th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

When he arrived in Oklahoma City in 2019 after being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers, he admitted he was nervous and uncertain. But support from the organization and Thunder fans allowed him to grow into the player he is today.

His teammates showed their admiration by attending the MVP ceremony together, all wearing matching designer trench coats and luxury watches gifted by Gilgeous-Alexander.

Even during the celebration, his focus often shifted to his wife, Hailey Summers, and their two-year-old son Ares, who stole attention by joining his father on stage.

For Gilgeous-Alexander, the award is historic. But he insists it represents something bigger than personal success.
