Coach Fortner: “Good Start for Us”
Kayla Alexander led Canada with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb each added 13 points. The victory gave Canada an early boost as it begins its campaign for a place in the Olympic qualification pathway.
I think it’s a good start for us. You always want to start with a win
Canadian head coach Nell Fortner commented, while also praising her team’s physical approach, with special emphasis on the gae against a Senegal side known for its strength on the glass.
Canada managed to take full control of the rebounding battle, finishing with a 15-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Tara Wallack shone by grabbing four offensive rebounds herself and helping Canada create additional scoring opportunities.
Swords helped Canada establish control from the opening quarter, knocking down three three-pointers as the Canadians built an early advantage. Canada led by as many as 17 points and maintained its lead throughout most of the contest.
They Responded to Senengal’s Late Attempt
Senegal tried to change the momentum during the third quarter, when they made a push after halftime, but Canada responded to maintain control and secure the victory.
The Canadians were particularly effective inside, holding a 26-14 advantage in points in the paint while shooting 52.5% from that area. Points off turnovers were tied at 11, while Senegal narrowly led bench scoring 31-29.
The result gives Canada an important opening victory before its next group-stage challenge.
Canada will have Tuesday off before returning to action Wednesday against the Philippines. The basketball game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
