  • Korpisalo will team up with Anton Forsberg to strengthen the Senator’s defence

The Ottawa Senators under the new ownership of Michael Andlauer and leadership of General Manager Pierre Dorion are looking to make key changes to the squad in preparation for the upcoming NHL season.

One of those key changes was signing a new goalie and the Senators decided to sign Joonas Korpisalo.

Senators Sign Joonas Korpisalo For $20 Million

The Senators were interested a few goalies among them being Korpisalo, Antti Raanta and Frederik Andersen from the Carolina Panthers. There were reports that the Senators were keen on getting Andersen but both Andersen and Raanta decided to remain with the Panthers.

Joonas Korpisalo played for the Los Angeles Kings and was looking to find a new team. The Senators decided to make a pitch for Korpisalo and ended up signing him to a 5 year contract valued at $20 million

That comes across as a good deal for both parties as the 29 year old Korpisalo was injured last year and had to take time off to recover from a hip injury. The Senators decided to invest in Korpisalo as they believe that he is yet to hit his peak form with Dorion stating that Korpisalo was still scratching the surface with regards to his potential and there was a lot of upside for the Senators as they have him on a 5 year contract.

The Finnish goalie said he was happy to sign with the Senators and join forces with Anton Forsberg to strengthen the Senator’s defence.

Korpisalo Looks To Bring Consistency To Senators

Korpisalo told media that one of the things he was looking forward to was bringing consistency to the Senators ahead of the new NHL season. Korpisalo has played with Forsberg in the past as the two of them were part of the Lake Erie Monsters (American Hockey League) and teamed up to help the Monsters win the 2016 Calder Cup.

Forsberg is still recovering from MCL tears in both his knees and will also be happy to team up with Korpisalo and strengthen the Senator’s defence. Korpisalo said that one of the reasons why it was easy to sign with the Senators was because he could team up with his old mate Forsberg.
