  • The Maple Leafs have decided to renew head coach Sheldon Keefe’s contract
  • His job was on the line after the Leafs fired GM Kyle Dubas
  • Keefe says he is looking forward to working with new GM Brad Treliving

The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to give their GM Kyle Dubas his walking papers after the Maple Leafs had a poor season. There was a lot of speculation that head coach Sheldon Keefe would follow Dubas and have his contract terminated.

Maple Leafs Decide To Give Keefe Another Chance

The Maple Leafs had a lot of decisions to make when it came to the roster and staff for the new season. New GM Brad Treliving made it clear when he took the role that he wasn’t just going to be making wholesale changes just for the sake of bringing something new to the team.

One of the key decisions that Treliving had to make was whether he wanted to retain Keefe for the upcoming season or part ways and get a new head coach. Keefe and ex-GM Dubas had a lot of history working together with the Leafs and some fans thought Treliving would decide to move on from Keefe.

Treliving ended up spending 17 hours with Keefe to get to know him and his thought process better. The 17 hour process was completed over a few days to find out what Keefe’s plans were for the Maple Leafs going forward and his general thought process regarding the game.

Treliving was convinced that it was in the best interests of the Leaps to retain Keefe and he will continue for the next season.

Keefe Looking Forward To Working With Treliving

Keefe said he was happy to continue his role with the Maple Leafs and looked forward to starting a new relationship with Treliving.

In a statement, Keefe said

It’s been a process but a good process and a thorough one. Obviously at times it was uncomfortable and uncertain but it was a good and necessary one. Understanding the position that Brad and the organization are in, I’m thrilled to be continuing on.

Keefe admitted that some of the questions he was asked made him uncomfortable at times but said that as he spent more time with Treliving, he found it easier and was now excited to work with the new GM ahead of the new NHL Season!
