Montréal Victoire Capture First Walter Cup With Dominant Win Over Ottawa

Summary:

  • Montréal defeated Ottawa 4-0 to win the franchise’s first Walter Cup.
  • Abby Roque scored twice while Ann Renée Desbiens posted a 23 save shutout.
  • Marie Philip Poulin was named Playoff MVP after recording eight postseason points.

The Montréal Victoire are champions for the first time in franchise history after shutting out the Ottawa Charge 4-0 on Wednesday night to win the Walter Cup in Game 4 of the PWHL Finals.

Standout Performances from Roque and Desbiens

Powered by two goals from Abby Roque and another standout performance from goaltender Ann Renée Desbiens, Montréal completed the series victory and delivered the first Walter Cup title to a Canadian team since the league launched three seasons ago.

Roque’s shot early in the second period deflected off Ottawa defender Rory Guilday and slipped past Charge goaltender Gwyneth Philips. The goal brought the win what quickly became a frustrating night for Ottawa’s offense.

Montréal sealed the victory in the third period after Roque struck again with a short handed goal at 9:58. Maggie Flaherty added another from the blue line minutes later before Lina Ljungblom capped the scoring late in the game following a strong individual effort around the net.

Desbiens was once again a difference maker for Montréal, stopping all 23 shots she faced to record her second shutout of the playoffs. Ottawa generated several quality scoring opportunities throughout the game but could not solve the veteran netminder.

Ottawa Failed to Capitalize

The Charge struggled throughout the series on the power play, finishing 0 for 10 across four games.

Ottawa had three chances with the advantage in Game 4 but failed to capitalize, including an important opportunity midway through the third period while trailing 1-0.

Montréal captain Marie Philip Poulin was named the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP after finishing tied for the postseason lead with eight points, including two goals and six assists.

The championship run was especially meaningful for Montréal after defeating the two time defending champion Minnesota Frost in the semifinals to reach the Walter Cup Finals for the first time.

Ottawa, meanwhile, suffered heartbreak for a second straight year after once again falling in the championship series. Despite another strong postseason run, the Charge were shut out for the first time during the playoffs.

Montréal opened the Finals with back to back overtime wins before Ottawa forced a fourth game with a 2-1 victory on Monday. The Victoire responded emphatically in Game 4, delivering one of their most complete performances of the hockey season to secure the title.
