Summary:

  • Canadian defender Shelina Zadorsky scored two goals against Costa Rica on Wednesday evening.
  • Jordyn Huitema scored once for a 3-0 final score.
  • The squad remains perfect at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup with three wins and they are heading into the quarterfinals.

After experiencing an exhausting medical ordeal that began when she contracted COVID-19 in December 2022 that included “every sick symptom you can name”, celiac disease, glandular fever, and a fresh case of COVID-19, 31-year-old Shelina Zadorsky has finally made a glorious comeback on the field.

On Wednesday evening, the defender from Kitchener, Ontario scored twice against Costa Rica, helping her team blank their opponents 3-0 and remain perfect at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup with their three wins.

Now, the team that ranks first in the knockout round is heading into the weekend quarterfinals that will take place in Los Angeles. They will be, once again, facing Costa Rica.

The Entire Team Celebrated the Goals

Shelina Zadorsky, whose health has finally been restored, has joined West Ham on loan from Tottenham. Her two starts at the W Gold Cup have already impressed, making a strong case for her to regain her spot in the regular lineup.

Coach Bev Priestman described that the “whole team” celebrated Zadorsky’s goals, adding that Shelina was very important to her teammates.

Priestman also described the tournament as one that will allow the player to “step up“, which she “absolutely did”.

The game marked the coach’s 50th game in charge. Since being appointed coach at the end of 2020, Priestman, who is best known for helping the Canadian women’s national team win the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the youngest coach at the tournament, improved to 31-9-10.

The squad was also assisted by Jordyn Huitema who scored the goal that outshot Costa Rica 12-1 at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium.

Quarterfinals Announced

The Costa Rica team was pulled out of a bowl during a drawing that was streamed live. This means the two squads will reunite this Saturday in LA.

The rest of the quarterfinals are Mexico vs Paraguay, Brazil vs Argentina, and the US vs Colombia

Provided Canada wins, it would face Colombia or the US in the semifinal.
