  • Canada created chances but settled for 0-0 against Tunisia in a rain-delayed friendly.
  • Building toward the World Cup with a few key friendlies remaining.

Canada played out a goalless draw with Tunisia in Toronto, but attention was also on Bosnia-Herzegovina securing their place as a tough World Cup opponent. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, the squad is beginning to take shape despite injuries and mixed results.

Canada to Play Against Bosnia in June

Canada’s national team had more than one match on its mind as it arrived at BMO Field on Tuesday. While preparing to face Tunisia in a friendly, players were also following events in Europe that would decide their first opponent at the upcoming World Cup.

Phones were out on the team bus as Bosnia-Herzegovina stunned Italy in a penalty shootout to claim the final spot in Group B. The result confirmed that Canada will open its campaign against Bosnia in Toronto on June 12.

Once on the field, Canada settled for a 0-0 draw with Tunisia in a match delayed by heavy rain and lightning. Despite the weather and a slow restart, the home side created several early chances but could not find a way through.

Maxime Crépeau had little to do in goal, but he knows the bigger test is coming.

The World Cup is arriving very fast. Bosnia was pretty much the team that was most in-form of the four that could have been a possibility … going to be a very tough opponent.

Head coach Jesse Marsch also spoke with respect about the challenge ahead.

These kids grew up in a war-torn country … these young men have been through a lot in life. I have a lot of respect for what Bosnia has achieved.

Lacking a Clear Finish

Canada looked lively in the first half, with Tani Oluwaseyi and Liam Millar both going close. Marcelo Flores impressed on the left, while Niko Sigur fired over from distance. Tunisia’s best chance came after a defensive mistake, but Millar raced back to stop a clear opportunity.

I knew Liam was fast, but I didn’t know he was that fastIsmaël Koné said. Marsch praised the effort as a key moment. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a play like Liam and how far he ran” he said.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Canada controlling possession but lacking a clear finish. The result comes after a 2-2 draw with Iceland and with several key players, including Alphonso Davies, still unavailable.

Marsch said,

The whole game I sat there feeling like, ‘I love this team. They’re fun, they’re dynamic, they’re energetic, they’re aggressive.

With just over 70 days until the World Cup begins, Canada will continue to fine-tune its squad. Friendly matches against Uzbekistan and Ireland are next, followed by group games against Bosnia, Qatar and Switzerland.

Every game’s going to be so tight” Crépeau said, adding that “small margins” are expected to make the difference.
