Bayern Crushes Atalanta 6-1, Davies Leaves Field in Tears After Injury Scare

Summary:
- Alphonso Davies left Bayern Munich’s Champions League match with Atalanta after a worrying non-contact injury.
- The Canadian star has only recently returned from earlier muscle and knee injuries.
- His fitness now raises questions ahead of Canada’s World Cup campaign this summer.
The sight of Alphonso Davies walking off the field yet again on Tuesday night was difficult for Bayern Munich fans to watch, and likely just as worrying for supporters of the Canadian national team.
The Pain Made Him Kneel Down
Late in Bayern’s Champions League match against Atalanta, with the German side already cruising at 6-0, Davies suddenly pulled up while chasing the ball around the 70th minute. There was no challenge and no contact. Moments later, the Canadian fullback dropped into a squat on the pitch, clearly in pain.
Davies covered his face with his shirt and waved his arms in frustration, a reaction that suggested he immediately knew something wasn’t right.
Several Bayern teammates quickly gathered around him, forming a small circle to give him some privacy while medical staff came on. When he finally got up to leave the field, members of the Bayern staff helped him off, his shirt still pulled over his face.
Possible Muscle Injury
When substitute Tom Bischof and coach Vincent Kompany approached him, Davies briefly covered his eyes with his hand as they spoke.
Before he went down, he seemed to gesture toward the bench and place a hand on his right thigh, hinting at the problem area. Soon after, he sat on the ground waiting for treatment.
After the match, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said Davies was being examined and that the team suspected a muscular injury.
The moment raised immediate concern because Davies has already dealt with several injuries over the past year. He had only recently returned to action after suffering a torn muscle fibre in his right hamstring during Bayern’s 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on February 21.
That injury came not long after another long recovery period. Davies had missed 262 days while recovering from a serious knee injury before finally returning on December 9 as a substitute in Bayern’s 3-1 Champions League victory over Sporting Lisbon at Allianz Arena.
His knee problem started a year ago in March, when he tore a ligament and suffered additional damage in Canada’s CONCACAF Nations League third-place match against the United States.
Then, Bayern criticized Canada’s national team staff, saying Davies had not undergone proper medical checks before flying back to Germany.
Despite the setback, the 25-year-old from Edmonton Davies is still one of the most important players for 29th ranked Canada, scoring 15 goals and providing 17 assists in 58 appearances for the national team.
Canada is getting ready to host Iceland and Tunisia in Toronto on March 28 and 31 for friendly matches. The team will then open its 2026 World Cup campaign on June 12 at BMO Field against a European qualifier. The tournament will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
