Vancouver Loses Champions Cup Quarterfinals Spot to Seattle

Summary:
- Vancouver suffered a 2-1 loss to Seattle, missing its quarterfinal qualification.
- Danny Musovski equalized in the 79th minute before Rothrock sealed a 2-1 win shortly after.
- Seattle will either meet Tigres UNAL or FC Cincinnati in the quarterfinals.
For a while, it felt like the night might get uncomfortable for the Seattle Sanders, as the Vancouver Whitecaps had pulled one back, and there was just enough time left to make things tense.
Turning Point
However, in the end, the Sounders handled it the way experienced teams tend to do, with composure and a late burst of quality.
The turning point came in the 79th minute. With Seattle needing just one goal to put the tie beyond reach, Danny Musovski stepped up and delivered. He met the ball in the air and guided it home, leveling the match at 1-1 and effectively shutting the door on any realistic Vancouver comeback.
That could have been enough, but Seattle didn’t stop there. Just four minutes later, Paul Rothrock made sure of it. He connected with a clean right-footed finish after a well-placed cross from Peter Kingston, giving the Sounders a 2-1 win on the night and a comfortable 5-1 aggregate result.
“It Could’ve Been a Trap Game”
Rothrock said
It was kind of a weird game, it could’ve been a trap game. But we found a way to win in Spokane in front of a different crowd, which was a really fun experience … Next round, here we come.
Seattle had chances early on, including a close attempt from Albert Rusnák inside the first minute, but couldn’t capitalize. Vancouver, meanwhile, found a lifeline in the 24th minute when Jeevan Badwal finished off a quick counterattack. It gave the visitors hope, even if the overall deficit still loomed large.
At halftime, head coach Brian Schmetzer knew adjustments were needed.
I laid into them a little bit at halftime. We changed the way we defended a little bit… Some of the tactical changes worked and the subs came on and finished the job.
Those substitutions proved decisive. Musovski, Rothrock and Kingston all entered in the second half and played direct roles in the comeback. Kingston, in particular, stood out with two assists, showing confidence well beyond his experience.
The match was also notable for its setting, as Seattle’s usual home is undergoing renovations, so the team was forced to move to Spokane, where a smaller but loud crowd created a lively atmosphere.
Now, Seattle moves on to the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals, where they will face either Tigres UNAL or FC Cincinnati. Whoever it is, the Sounders look ready.
