Whitecaps Bounce Back With 3-0 Win Over Dynamo

Summary:
- The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Houston Dynamo 3-0 on Wednesday.
- Emmanuel Sabbi scored in the 4th minute as Vancouver took control early.
- Sebastian Berhalter and Brian White added goals to seal the victory, while Yohei Takaoka notched his league-best 10th shutout of the season.
The Vancouver Whitecaps stopped their losing streak on Wednesday night at BC Place, when they cruised to a clear and much-needed 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo.
Emmanuel Sabbi set the tone early on, scoring just four minutes in.
The early breakthrough came courtesy of Édier Ocampo, who delivered a pinpoint ball into the box that found Mathias Laborda. His header forced a diving save from Dynamo keeper Jonathan Bond, and Sabbi was right there to pounce, hammering home a half-volley to give Vancouver the lead.
The Whitecaps doubled their advantage just before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Brian White found space on the right side of the area and slid a perfect pass back toward the top of the box.
Sebastian Berhalter charged in and struck it first-time, burying the shot just outside the penalty area.
After the break, Brian White had a chance to get on the scoresheet himself when Vancouver was awarded a penalty. Bond guessed right and stopped White’s initial effort, but the striker reacted quickly and slotted the rebound to make it 3-0 in the 56th minute.
Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka’s top form between the posts also contributed largely to the final result of the evening. The 29-year-old born in Japan’s two saves secured his 10th clean sheet of the season, keeping him at the top of the league.
Takaoka, who joined the Whitecaps just ahead of the 2023 season, once again proved, if necessary, why he was selected as part of the 26-man roster to play at the 2025 MLS All-Star Game on July 23rd.
Four Out of Five Losses
The win was a crucial response for Vancouver (12-5-5), who had dropped two straight matches by a combined 6-0 and lost four of their last five coming into the night including the 2025 CONCACAF Final .
Despite holding 56% of the possession, Houston (7-11-5) couldn’t find a way past Takaoka and struggled to generate clear chances.
The Dynamo managed 13 shots to Vancouver’s 14 but were limited to just two on target, while the Whitecaps put seven of their efforts on frame.
For Jesper Sørensen’s side, the result brings back some momentum in the middle of the heated playoff race, while highlighting their ability to bounce back after a rough stretch.
Houston, meanwhile, will have to work on regrouping quickly as they keep battling inconsistency on the road.
With their defense back to its resolute best and their attack clicking again, the Whitecaps will look to build on this performance as they head into the second half of the season.
