The team decided to sack General Manager Kyle Dubas on May 19 and fans were keen to know who was going to replace Dubas.
Brad Treliving Takes Over As Maple Leafs GM
Maple Leaf fans did not have to wait too long to find out as the team confirmed on 01 June that they had hired Brad Treliving to be their new GM. Treliving previously served as the GM for the Calgary Flames and is also friends with ex-GM Kyle Dubas.
Treliving did his first press conference at the Scotiabank Arena and said he was very excited to take on the responsibility of becoming the 18th GM for the Maple Leafs. Toronto have not won the Stanley Cup for the last 56 years and it will be up to Treliving to break that drought and give the Maple Leafs new impetus.
He has his work cut out as there are a number of pressing tasks that he needs to address immediately. One of the most important tasks is to see if he can get star player Auston Matthews to sign a contract extension and continue to play for the Maple Leafs. Matthews current contract will expire at the end of June.
Treliving told Maple Leaf fans that his goal is to not come in and make huge changes just to show that he is different, as at the end of the day, one needs to see if those changes end up making a difference at the end of the day.
Pittsburgh Penguins Hire Kyle Dubas
When former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas was cut, he released a statement on Twitter saying that he was planning to spend more time with his young family in the near future. Fans were a bit surprised when the NHL team the Pittsburgh Penguins announced on 01 June that they had hired Dubas to be their new President of Hockey Operations.
Dubas said that after talking it over with his wife, he decided that it was a great opportunity to work with the Pittsburgh Penguins!
