Ryan Blaney Earns Pole Position for NASCAR Monster Energy Cup in Vegas

Ryan Blaney earned pole position for Sundays Monster Energy Cup race

Time Trials for the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway saw Ryan Blaney winning pole position. This is Blaney’s third pole in his career with Team Penske Ford and a 191.489 mph lap, easily beating Kevin Harvick on what as a windy evening.

With the 2018 season still young, Ryan Blaney burned through qualifying with the fastest time to earn his place at the front of the starting grid. It was his first pole position since Phoenix last year. Blaney, 24, is off to a strong start this year having finished 7th at Daytona, and if all goes well for, he will rack up his second Nascar victory on Sunday in Vegas.

Commenting on the pole position, Blaney said,

“I thought our car was pretty good, but I didn’t know if we had pole speed,” Blaney said. “We made really good changes between practice and qualifying, and really good changes throughout qualifying.”

Blaney added,

“That’s really all you can ask for. I think our team does such a good job of getting better round to round. That’s so huge now with the three rounds. That’s something we’ve been working really hard on for the last couple of years, and it’s paying off.”

For Kevin Harvick, he continued with his solid start to 2018 and earned the second position on the starting grid for Sunday’s race and is expected to give Blaney a run for his money once the light turns green. Harvick, part of Stewart-Haas Racing, Harvick had a lap time of 190.248 mph, his best in the last eighteen races.

For Ford, today’s results were good news as they are dominating with Fords sitting in five positions of eight on the front grid. Kurt Busch, a native of Las Vegas, and also racing for Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, qualified third on the grid with a speed of 190.067 mph. Fourth on the grid is Martin Truex Jr driving for Furniture Row Racing Toyota.

Said Blaney,

“Three Fords in the top three there, that’s pretty cool”

What You Need to Know about The Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Ford, for the second week in a row, is the dominant one at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. At Atlanta, Ford secured the top three qualifying positions and saw Harvick taking the checkered flag. When you look at the grid for Sunday’s race, it is a ford sitting in eight of twelve positions at the front of the grid, and only saw three cars fail to make the final round of qualifying.

Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson, both veterans of Nascar racing, just fell short of making the final round. Busch, however, earned 13th on the grid and Johnston was right behind him in 14th. Busch had a busy schedule having to rush off to take part in qualifying for the Truck series.

For Blaney, today’s pole position was a good thing for the driver who earned a third place finish and spot on the podium in last year’s Monster Energy Cup race.

Commenting, Blaney said,

“It’s just a combination of everybody working hard, and it shows the speed we’ve had all weekend. It would be really nice to get a win this early in the season.”
