The girls are getting ready for a faceoff with Turkey (0-5) in another attempt to climb up from their current third position.
Rachel Homan and her Canadian team delivered a strong performance Monday night, securing an 8-4 victory over Tabitha Peterson’s Team United States at the LGT Women’s World Curling Championship.
Sarah Wilkes: “We Got Our Job Done”
The win improved Canada’s round-robin record to 4-1, keeping them in the top three standings behind undefeated Korea and Switzerland (both at 5-0).
Competing at Uijeongbu Arena, Homan’s squad, which consisted of Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, maintained control throughout the match by capitalizing on key scoring opportunities.
They posted two-point ends in the second, fourth, and eighth while limiting Tabitha Peterson’s American team to single-point ends in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth.
Wilkes said,
We got our job done (with converting deuces), especially later in the game when we want to make sure we score. Getting two in those ends feels really good for the momentum
The Canadians, Better at Accuracy, Takeouts, and Draw
The girls showed excellent precision skills, shooting an event-leading 93 percent as a team. Miskew’s curling accuracy reached 94 percent, while Fleury and Wilkes each posted a solid 93 percent.
Homan also curled with an impressive accuracy of 92 percent against their opponents.
In contrast, the Americans, who dropped to 2-3 in the standings, did their best to try to match the Canadiens’ but the precision meter stopped at only 81 percent.
Canada also held the advantage in key stats, leading in draw percentage (92-84) and takeouts (94-77).
The way they executed draws, runbacks, and rolls helped them effectively shut down all offensive plays attempted by their opponents.
Wilkes added,
It felt like we put together everything we learned from all the previous games and came out there confident knowing what the sheet was going to do, what the rocks were doing
Their upcoming challenge will be a game against Turkey’s Dilsat Yildiz, who has failed to win yet (0-5) in the tournament.
