Oilers Captain Connor McDavid Steals Show At NHL Awards

The National Hockey League (NHL) awards is an annual event that looks to reward players, coaches and teams for their outstanding performances during the NHL season.

The 2017 NHL Awards Ceremony took place on June 21 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and a number of prestigious awards were given away on the night.

The person who stole the show at the NHL awards was Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid who had an outstanding season and stood head and shoulders above the rest. The 20 year old McDavid won the prestigious Hart Memorial Trophy, the Ted Lindsay Award, the Art Ross Trophy and was also named as the NHL 18 cover boy by EA Sports.

To put into perspective just how well Connor McDavid faired at the awards, let us look at some stats. The voting for the Hart Memorial Trophy showed that his competitors Sidney Crosby received 14 votes, Sergei Bobrovsky had four votes, Brad Marchand and Brent Burns had one vote each. McDavid ended up with 147 first place votes making it an easy decision for him to be conferred with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the NHL.

McDavid had to come on stage to receive all his awards and accolades and was clearly not comfortable making award speeches. The Oilers captain who led his team to their first play-offs in eleven years said that fans would now have greater expectations from the Oilers and from him going into the next season.

In a statement, McDavid said

It’s so exciting. We have one good year and people are doing that. Ultimately, we’ve only had one good year and each season is a new challenge and we realize what made us successful last year and carry it over. I think we expect ourselves to have a good year. The media and the fans are going to put expectations on us, but I think we put those same pressures on ourselves.

He also stated that he was happy to see the way Canadian teams had performed in the NHL but at the end of the day all that mattered to him was how the Edmonton Oilers performed during the next NHL season.

Some of the other hockey award winners included Auston Matthews who won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the Best Rookie, Patrice Bergeron who won the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the Best defensive forward and John Tortorella who won the Jack Adams Award for the coach of the year.
