Canadian ice hockey pro Nick Suzuki was appointed the new captain of the Montreal Canadiens (Habs). Suzuki is the 31st player to be appointed as captain and at 23, he is now the youngest captain in the history of the team.

Suzuki Ready to Take On New Responsibilities

Suzuki was humble and optimistic about the latest distinction conferred upon him. He said that being the team’s captain was an honor and the extra responsibility was something he would enjoy.

Previously, Suzuki was Vegas Golden Knights 13th overall pick during the 2017 National Hockey League (NHL) draft. The former Golden Knight was traded to the Canadiens in 2018 alongside his teammate Tomas Tatar. In 2021, Suzuki marked his career high with 21 goals and 40 assists in 82 regular-season games scoring 61 points. The center has played in 209 NHL regular-season games, scoring 143 points, which comprised 49 goals and 94 assists.

Montreal head coach Martin St-Louis announced the news of Suzuki wearing the C on September 12 at the Laval-sur-le-Lac club during the team’s annual golf tournament. Brendan Gallagher and Joel Edmundson were appointed as alternate captains. Suzuki has replaced defenceman Shea Weber as Montreal’s captain. Weber was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights for Evgenii Dadonov in June 2022.

The ex-Golden Knight has played for Montreal in three seasons and has a fair share of highs and lows. Montreal had lost in the 2020 playoffs’ opening round and then lost to Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021 Stanley Cup finals. The Canadiens landed at the bottom of the Eastern Conference rankings in 2021-22. Suzuki has taken all of these failures in his stride and says he wishes to ‘lead by example‘.  Check the latest live odds for the NHL and find out if Suzuki can lead the Habs to a the Stanley Cup Finals in 2022?

Canadiens Announce Jersey Deal with RBC

The Canadiens have also announced that they would feature the Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) logo on their jerseys as part of a multi-year agreement signed on September 12. For each jersey sold, $20 will go to the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation on behalf of RBC. The jerseys will be available at the team’s official store at the Bell Center.

Greenpeace Quebec was critical of the deal as it considers RBC an active contributor to climate change.
