Milos Raonic Suffers fourth Round Loss to John Isner

Milos Raonic and John Isner shake hands after Isner defeated Raonic in five sets on Sunday at the U.S. Open

Once again, Canada’s top ranked tennis player Milos Raonic could not stop John Isner. Raonic came back to force a fifth set, hoping to overcome the curse that seems to come into play when facing Isner but failed to find the magic combination needed to get the job done.

Isner and Raonic are considered the two of the best servers in the game today, but it was Isner who came out on top with powerful serves to defeated Raonic 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 during fourth round play at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

The U.S. Open is the last Grand Slam of the season, and Raonic was the last Canadian remaining in the field. For Raonic, he was hoping for a win after John Isner brought an end to his run at Wimbledon this year in four sets, but it wasn’t to be.

In six matches between the two, Isner has prevailed in five. At 6 ft, 10 inches tall, the No. 11 seeded overpowered the No.25 seeded Canadian to advance to the next round. This is important information for punters looking to place live bets on future tennis matches, such as those ofered by Betway Sports, especially if the two are paired against each other in the future.

Commenting on the loss and his track record against Isner, Raonic said,

“I’ve definitely struggled with him, specifically. There’s other guys that are big servers that I’ve played better against. For me, I think the biggest thing is there’s not guys that make me hit returns above my shoulders. That’s sort of the hardest part for me. Today, I was much more successful going further back, buying my time, but I wasn’t sharp enough when I needed to be.”

U.S. Open

Raonic started out strong breaking serve against Isner in his first serve and won the first set. Isner returned the favour in the second set breaking Raonic’s serve and winning the second set to tie the match and went on to win the third set as well.

It looked as if it was going to be a three-set match until Raonic managed to pull off a save and forced a fifth set after winning the fourth set. Before starting the final set, Raonic turned to his trainer for help with a hip injury that has been bothering him when serving.

Speaking of the nagging problem, Raonic stated,

“Just started feeling like a bit of a sharp feeling in my hip. Tried to make it feel better. It was sort of a pain that dulled down, but I just wasn’t able to push that much.”

In 2011, Raonic underwent hip surgery after an awkward fall but claimed the pain felt on Sunday was different but that he expects to be fine in time to play the Canadian Davis Cup in September.

As the final set began, it was Raonic who fell behind after Isner won the first two games. Raonic was unable to recover against the powerhouse Isner who eventually won the set 2-6 and brought an end to Raonic’s time at the U.S. Open.

Raonic served eighteen aces, Isner served twenty and overall. Raonic was 80% on his first serves while Isner was 86%. Ultimately, it was Isner who played better and made it clear Raonic has some work to do when it comes to future pairings.
