Match Between Switzerland and Brazil Ends in a Draw

Brazil’s Neymar da Silva Santos fights to retain possession of the ball in match against Switzerland

Brazil is now the fourth team to join previous Champions winners who have struggled in their opening matches. After ending in a 1-1 draw, Brazil is at risk of not advancing to the next stage. For a team that hails from a passionate country, this is a not where they wanted to be.

Brazil scored the opening goal in yesterday’s match against Switzerland when Philippe Coutinho, who is playing in his first World Cup scored twenty minutes into the first half with a shot that went into the net after bouncing off the post. A complaint that João Miranda de Souza Filho was shoved by Swiss player Steven Zuber was dismissed by the referee who did not review the play.

Speaking on the incident, Miranda said,

“I was pushed out of the way. There is video of what happened and the referee could have seen it. But it didn’t happen, we got a draw but this is only the beginning for us. We knew this game wasn’t going to be easy.”

Referee Cesar Ramos also chose to acknowledge penalty claims during the latter part of the second half after Mexico’s Gabriel Jesus was taken to the ground by Manuel Akanjl, a defender for Switzerland.

Switzerland played aggressively towards Neymar da Silva Santos racking up ten yellow cards out of the fourteen they received being against Neymar. For Switzerland’s coach Vladimir Petkovic, he felt the Miranda incident was nothing more than a standard challenge and further was dismissive that the Swiss treated Neymar harshly stating that neutralising Neymar was a pivotal component to their game.

After a devastating 2014 World Cup, Brazil was anxious to win its first game against Switzerland, who dominated the midfield for long periods against the South American team.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic said he was proud of the determination his team had saying,

“The first 40 minutes were tough for us, and at halftime, I told the players to stay cool and press forward. They did, and it worked.”

Philippe Coutinho, who scored the only goal, also near scored a second time early into the second half but sent the ball wide of the net. Commenting, Coutinho said,

“I’m very glad to score but what was important was our effort to win and what we did as a team is what counts. We had some great moments and positive moments. Now we need to think about the next match.”

Adenor Leonardo Bacchi, who has been the coach for Brazil since 2016, has won seventeen of twenty-two matches but was unable to see another win under his belt yesterday and had to settle for a draw.

Adenor Leonardo Bacchi didn’t hide his disappointment but made no excuses saying,

“What happened with Miranda was clear, but it doesn’t explain the result. There was a lot of pressure and anxiety on the players and that translated into the finishes that were not precise.

Bacchi continued adding,

”We had 20 finishes but we should have make the goalkeeper work harder. But of course I’m not happy with the result and of course I wanted to win tonight.”
