Major Move on Opening Day: Toronto Lands Sergei Bobrovsky

Summary:

  • Toronto signed veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract worth $21 million.
  • The Maple Leafs also added Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger and Zack MacEwen during a busy opening day of free agency.
  • Toronto completed multiple trades, including acquiring Nick Paul from Tampa Bay and sending Nick Robertson to Pittsburgh.

Toronto couldn’t have experienced a better opening day of NHL free agency even if they tried. The team signed veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract that carries an average annual value of $7 million, a move that makes the Maple Leafs one of the league’s most accomplished goaltenders amid their ongoing pursuit of a Stanley Cup

Impressive Career

Sergei Bobrovsky arrives in Toronto after spending seven seasons with the Florida Panthers, where he played a key role in back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.

The 37-year-old finished last season with a 27- 23 record, along with a .877 save percentage and goals-against average. While those numbers were not among the best of his career, Toronto believes his playoff experience and ability to perform under pressure make him an ideal addition.

General manager John Chayka praised the veteran netminder, saying there is no other goalie he would rather trust in a Game 7 situation.

Bobrovsky also brings an impressive career résumé that includes two Vezina Trophy victories and more regular-season season wins since entering the NHL as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

Beyond the Crease

The club signed forward Jack Roslovic on a two year, $8 million contract after he scored 21 goals with the Edmonton Oilers last season.

Veteran center Colton Sissons also joined on a two year deal worth $8.5 million, while Teddy Blueger is two-year year contract valued at $5 million. Toronto later added forward Zack MacEwen to further improve its depth.

The Maple Leafs also reshaped their roster through trades by acquiring forward Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for goaltender Dennis Hildeby and future draft picks.

Meanwhile, forward Nick Robertson was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fourth-round draft selection, bringing an end to his six-year stint with the organization whilst they are actively looking to offload Morgan Rielly.

With a proven championship goaltender and several experienced additions, Toronto has significantly reshaped its roster and signaled its intent to compete immediately in the upcoming NHL season.
