Summary

  • Brooklyn Nets suspends Kyrie Irving for five games for anti-semantic stance
  • The nets want Irving to do 6 things before they take him back
  • Kevin Durant says all of the drama is unnecessary

The Kyrie Irving anti- semantic controversy has been a hot topic in the NBA during the last week. Irving refused to apologize for sharing a link to an anti-semantic documentary titled “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America“.

When Irving was criticized on social media for his anti-semantic endorsement, he took down the post but refused to apologize.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said he was disappointed with Irving and said he would speak with him this week.

Kyrie Irving Suspended For Five Games

Joe Tsai, the owner of the Brooklyn Nets gave Kyrie Irving a lot of time to consider the backlash and make an apology. With Irving continuing to ignore the issue and not issuing any apology, the Brooklyn Nets decided to take action and suspend Irving for a minimum of 5 games without pay. Which will means they will be without a vital player for there next live games – can the Nets win without him?

While some NBA fans welcomed the decision by the Nets, others felt that the decision came a little too late and the punishment was too lenient. The Nets have backed up the suspension by issuing a 6 point checklist that Irving must meet before he is allowed to return to the team.

The Nets want Irving to donate $500,000 of his own money to charities that support anti-hate causes, they want him to condemn and apologize for the film he shared and go through a sensitivity program. Irving will also have to go through anti-semantic training, meet with Joe Tsai to confirm that he understands how serious the situation has turned out and also meet with Jewish leaders and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Kyrie Irving has shown that he will face the music and not back down from his beliefs as shown with his stance against the COVID-19 vaccine. Will Irving be willing to condemn a film he endorsed and issue an apology that he refused to give earlier now that he has been suspended?

Kevin Durant Says Unnecessary Drama

Irving’s teammate Kevin Durant has come out and said that the whole situation has caused unnecessary drama for the Brooklyn Nets and said he felt that the organization should have just stayed quiet.

When Durant got flak for his comments, he quickly released another tweet and said he does not condone anti- semetism or hate speech in any form!
