Kitchener Rangers Capture Memorial Cup with 6-2 Victory Over Everett Silvertips

Summary:

  • Sam O’Reilly led the Kitchener Rangers with a goal and three assists in the Memorial Cup final.
  • Kitchener finished the tournament undefeated, winning all four games in Kelowna.
  • The victory secured the Rangers’ third Memorial Cup championship and extended the WHL’s title drought to 12 years.

The Kitchener Rangers have grabbed yet another Memorial Cup after defeating the Everett Silvertips 6-2 in Sunday’s championship game in Kelowna.

Third Memorial Cup Victory

Sam O’Reilly shone bright with one goal and three assists, helping the Ontario Hockey League champions finish an undefeated run and take home the franchise’s third Memorial Cup title.

Jared Woolley scored the game-winning goal, while Jack Pridham added his tournament-leading fifth goal as Kitchener pulled away from Everett. The result mirrored the Rangers’ 6-2 victory over the Silvertips during round-robin play earlier in the week.

Kitchener never trailed in the final, with Luke Ellinas opening the scoring before Dylan Edwards restored the Rangers’ lead at 2-1.

After carrying a 3-1 advantage into the third period, the Rangers capitalized on a lengthy 5-on-3 power play with two goals to put the game out of reach.

Christian Humphreys completed the scoring with a short-handed empty-net goal, while Haeden Ellis and Cameron Reid each contributed two assists.

Kirsch Defended 30 Shots

Goaltender Christian Kirsch turned aside 30 shots to help Kitchener complete a dominant tournament performance. The Rangers earned a direct berth into the championship game after winning all three round-robin contests, including a 5-0 victory over the host Kelowna Rockets and a 3-2 win against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.

For Everett, Matias Vanhanen and Carter Bear scored the club’s two goals, each netting their fourth of the tournament. Vanhanen finished tied with Pridham and O’Reilly atop the tournament scoring race with eight points.

One of the tournament’s standout performers was Everett defenseman Landon DuPont. The 17-year-old recorded at least one point in every game he played in Kelowna and assisted on both Silvertips goals in the final.

DuPont finished the tournament with six points in four games after returning from an undisclosed injury to score twice in Everett’s semifinal victory over Chicoutimi.

Goaltender Anders Miller made 26 saves for the Silvertips but suffered his second defeat of the tournament against Kitchener.

The loss extended the Western Hockey League’s Memorial Cup drought to 12 years, with the league still searching for its first championship since 2014.
