Fans of winter sports tuned into the Giant Slalom World Cup for women that took place over the weekend at Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. The weather started to get worse as the event took place with snowy and dark conditions that made it very difficult for the participants.
Bad Weather Cannot Stop Federica Brignone
Federica Brignone from Italy did not let the poor weather conditions impact her mental state and went on to defy the weather and win the giant slalom tournament and in doing so created a record for becoming the oldest women at 33 to win a World Cup.
Brignone who won an Olympic silver medal said that she had prepared for the conditions and trained last month in similar conditions. When it started snowing and getting really windy, it made it hard to see but her brother encouraged her and told her that she was going to be okay as they had trained for such conditions.
Brignone was in top form at Mont-Tremblant and went on to win her second World Cup. She initially trailed Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova who is the Olympic champion in the first run by 1.22 seconds but made up in her second run to win by a very tight margin of 33 hundredths of a second to beat Lara Gut-Behrami from Sweden and finish with a time of 2:11:95.
Val Grenier From Ontario Took 6th Place
Val Grenier who is from St. Isidore, Ontario had a dream of racing in the Giant Slalom World Cup on Mont-Tremblant and got the chance to fulfil that dream over the weekend. Her first run did not go very well as she ended up in 11th place. Laurent Praz, who is the Canadian women’s head coach for alpine had a lot of confidence in Grenier and backed her to have a podium finish.
Grenier did much better in her second run and ended up taking 3rd place in her second run with a time of 1:04.69. This performance enabled her to jump up to 6th place to finish the World Cup. Grenier said it was difficult to see due to the weather conditions but she ended up having a lot of fun in the end.
