Canadian Curling Team Wins Third World Silver Medal

Team Canada win Silver at 2024 World Men's Curling Championship

  • Canada’s curling team led by Brad Gushue has won a third world silver medal.
  • The title was scooped up at the world men’s curling championship in Switzerland.
  • Sweden won the seventh event title while Italy took home bronze.

Canada’s Brad Gushue and his curling team from St. John’s could not match Rachel Homan and her teams gold instead ranking second at this year’s world men’s curling championship that was held in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

They were defeated once again by Niklas Edin and his Swedish teammates who scooped up their seventh title of the event.

History Repeats Itself

The scenario has repeated itself several times ever since the Canadians took home their last world title in 2017 when Gushue managed to beat Edin 4-2 during the Edmonton final.

Ever since, Edin grabbed five of the last six world championships and four of the respective wins came over Canadian skips

Three of them were at the expense of Gushue, while the rest were against Kevin Koe in 2019.

Sunday’s 6-5 victory against Canada marked Edin’s seventh world title, which represents a record for a skip.

It feels indescribable”, Edin commented on the win, “and it feels so good after this week“.

The skip went 11-1 in the round-robin before he won both of his playoff matches.

It felt like we played so well the whole week, obviously it was going to be a tough one [in the final].

“For the Fourth Time, Silver Sucks”

Gushue, who took home silver in four of the six tournaments since his championship, including the last three, commented on the new result, saying “For the fourth time, silver sucks“.

He added that while being second in the world makes them “proud”, it is still “just disappointing”.

That’s four [final losses] in a row for me and I’m sure at some point down the road I’ll appreciate it more than I do now, but right now it’s tough to take.

The Canadian skip further explained that they “fought, made a lot of shots” and forced the Swedish team to “play a very, very difficult shot“.

Italy came in third in this year’s game for a bronze medal after skip Joel Retornaz scored three in the ninth end and managed a spectacular 7-6 comeback win over Scotland after stealing one in the 10th.
