Canada Will Meet Morocco in World Cup Round of 16

Summary:

  • Morocco defeated the Netherlands on penalties after a 1-1 draw to reach the Round of 16 at the World Cup.
  • Canada advanced with a 1-0 win over South Africa, reaching its first-ever World Cup knockout stage.
  • The two teams will meet again in a repeat of their 2022 World Cup group stage clash.

It’s official: Canada will be facing Morocco in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup following the North African’s side 3-2 victory on penalties against the Netherlands. The teams initially finished the Round of 32 match in a 1-1 draw.

Second Meeting at the World Cup

The Netherlands took the lead in the 73rd minute through Cody Gakpo and appeared on course for victory until Issa Diop equalized in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, sending the match into extra time.

After two goalless 15-minute periods, the tie was decided by a penalty shootout, where Morocco held their nerve to secure a place in the next round.

The result sets up a second consecutive World Cup meeting between Canada and Morocco, continuing a growing rivalry between the two sides on soccer’s biggest stage.

Morocco, ranked seventh in the world entering the tournament, defeated Canada 2-1 in their final group stage match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

That campaign saw the Atlas Lions go on to reach the semi-finals, marking one of the most historic runs by an African team in World Cup history.

Another Milestone for the Canadians

Canada’s 1-0 win against South Africa signaled a defining moment in the country’s World Cup journey, as it sent them into the knockout rounds for the first time in history, reiterating their fast growth in international soccer.

The decisive match in Los Angeles witnessed the struggle of the two teams to create clear chances for much of the game. South Africa held firm defensively, but Canada gradually increased pressure through quick transitions and set pieces.

The breakthrough finally came deep into stoppage time, courtesy of midfielder Stephen Eustáquio who struck a composed finish from distance and managed to seal a dramatic win.

Coach Jesse Marsch credited the team’s resilience throughout the tournament, particularly in managing a demanding group stage schedule that included a heavy win over Qatar and a narrow defeat to Switzerland.

The return of key figures such as Alphonso Davies during the knockout phase has also strengthened the team’s balance and attacking threat.

South Africa, meanwhile, exit the competition after what had already been a historic run of their own. Their disciplined defensive structure and organised midfield play had carried them into the knockout stage, but they were ultimately undone by a single moment of quality in the closing minutes.
