Canada Shine At IIHF World Juniors With Wins Over Finland & Slovakia

Team Canada at the World Junior Championship 2018Canada is expected to pose a serious threat to winning the World Junior Hockey Championship after they opened their campaign this week with a 4-2 win over Team Finland and followed that up with a thumping 6-0 win over Slovakia.

Their opening game against Team Finland was pretty intense as Team Canada started out in very aggressive fashion while overcoming a series of bad turnovers and penalties on defense early on. However, as the game progressed it seemed Canada began to settle down and kept the opposition in its own side of the rink for much of the last period.

Team Canada had to deal with nerves in its first game at the World Junior Hockey Championship and eventually finished with a 4-2 win. The keys to success were the aggressive opening play where three players launched attacks on the Finnish defense and it paid off.

However, Team Canada head coach Dominque Ducharme said that based on what he saw in the opening game, there was a lot of things that Team Canada could work on to improve and get better. It looks like Team Canada put in the work behind the scenes as their second game on Wednesday night against Team Slovakia was a one-sided game as Team Canada completely dominated from start to finish and ended with a 6-0 scoreline. Ducharme will be pleased with the performance as Team Canada outplayed Team Slovakia in every department.

Canada’s biggest challenge will be Team USA who opened their campaign with a win. Team USA is scheduled to play Team Slovakia on Thursday night and the Americans will want to put in a dominating display so that they send a message to Team Canada and the other teams at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Team Canada will take a lot of confidence from these two wins. They travel to the New Era Stadium to practice on the outdoor rink on Thursday. The players had a good outing against Slovakia and will not be training too hard during their practice session.

In a statement, Ducharme said

It’s about the environment, not just the ice. We won’t be on the ice long. We want our guys to feel the ice, to feel the stadium. We don’t want it to become too much of a big thing when we get there. We’ll see how the ice is
