Canada Beats Poland For Semi-Final Berth

Team Canada’s next challenge was against Poland and it was made a little easier for Canada as Poland was without world number 1 Iga Swiatek who recently won the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico to reclaim her world number 1 spot.

Stakusic had a tough opening game against Magdalena Frech losing the first set but she came back strong to win the next two and take the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The 18 year old who is the youngest player on Team Canada’s roster was thrilled with her performance. In an interview, she said

I’m feeling amazing. This week so far has been one of the most amazing experiences that I have had. I’m just so happy that I was able to fight today and find a way to pull it out and give Canada the lead.

Leylah Fernandez is continuing to make a name for herself and put in another strong performance beating Magda Linette in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Her victory ensured a place in the semi-finals for Team Canada, something Canada hasn’t done since 1988. The Billie Jean King Cup was formerly known as the Federation Cup or the Fed Cup.
