The Billie Jean King Cup is currently taking place at the Estadio La Cartuja in Seville, Spain with 12 countries taking part in the tennis tournament.

The Billie Jean King Cup is named after the veteran American tennis player who won a total of 12 grand slams and is often referred to as the “World Cup of Tennis for women“.

2023 Billie Jean King Cup

This tournament used to be called the Federation Cup but was renamed as the Billie Jean King Cup in 2020 to honour Billie Jean King who won the Fed Cup 4 times as a captain and 7 times as a player.

The 12 countries taking part in the tournament are hosts Spain, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Poland and the United States. The 2022 Billie Jean King championship was won by Switzerland who defeated Australian in the finals. Poland gained entry into the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup via a wildcard while Great Britain failed to qualify for this year’s tournament.

Team Canada Confident With Strong Squad

Team Canada will start the tournament on Nov 08 when they face hosts Spain and will then play Poland on Nov 09. Team Canada look to be one of the strongest team’s on paper at the tournament as Team Canada features a nice blend of youth and experience. 

Team Canada will feature the young and exciting Leylah Fernandez who won the Hong Open in 2023. Fernandez is just 21 years old and will be looking to continue her run of good form at the Billie Jean King Cup. Also in the squad is Genie Bouchard who is returning to represent Team Canada after a break of over 5 years. 

The other players in the squad include 18 year old Marina Stakusic who has had a great run in 2023. In September, she won the ITF Player of the Month and has also tasted success in Spain after winning a title in Valladolid, Spain. The other two players in Team Canada are veteran Rebecca Marino who is 32 years old and Gaby Dabrowski.
