Steady Serve for the Winning Duo
The second-seeded Canadian-Brazilian pair managed to defeat Americans Peyton Stearns and Ingrid Neel 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted just over an hour. Dabrowski, from Ottawa, and Stefani controlled much of the contest and wrapped up the victory in 61 minutes.
The duo was steady on serve throughout the match. They recorded two aces and just one double fault while winning all nine of their service games.
On the return side, they converted three of their nine return opportunities and made the most of their chances by winning three of six break points.
Stearns and Neel also hit two aces and had one double fault, but they struggled to break through on return. They managed to hold six of their nine service games but were unable to win a return game or convert a break point.
Dabrowski who has changed her partner this year and Stefani are now getting ready to face the seventh-seeded team of Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez in the quarterfinals.
Mboko and Andreeva Reached the Next Round
Elsewhere in the women’s doubles draw, Toronto’s Victoria Mboko and her Russian partner Mirra Andreeva battled through a dramatic three-set match to reach the next round.
The pair edged Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and American Hailey Baptiste 7-6 (7), 3-6, 11-9 in a contest that lasted one hour and 40 minutes. The match was tightly contested from start to finish, with both teams trading momentum before Mboko and Andreeva sealed the win in the deciding match tiebreak.
Mboko and Andreeva recorded four aces but also committed six double faults. They won four of their 11 service games but were aggressive on return, taking five of 10 return games. They also showed resilience when it mattered most, saving six of the 13 break points they faced while converting five of their eight break chances.
Next up, the duo will play against Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic and Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina.
In men’s doubles action, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo and his American partner Evan King were knocked out after a quick 6-2, 6-2 defeat against Brazil’s Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos.
The Brazilian team controlled play from the start, winning all eight of their service games and four of eight return games. Luz and Matos will now move on to face American Christian Harrison and Britain’s Neal Skupski in the round of 16.
