Summary

  • Some of Canada’s top athletes have withdrawn from the 2022 Commonwealth Games Over Scheduling Concerns
  • Pierce LePage, Aaron Brown, Andre De Grasse and Jerome Blake drop out
  • Athletes unable to recover in time due to back to back schedules with World Championships

The 2022 Commonwealth Games is set to take place in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 08 August and will feature the best athletes from around the world. Canada will be sending a total of 272 athletes who will take part in 18 different sports at the Commonwealth Games and 5 Para sports.

Canada Will Not Be At Full Strength

While every country looks to send across their best athletes to compete in the Commonwealth Games, Canada will not be at full strength. This is because some of their top athletes have decided to withdraw from the competition. So far, we have confirmation that Pierce LePage, Aaron Brown, Andre De Grasse and Jerome Blake have decided to pull out.

All four of these athletes took part in the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA which just came to a close. LePage won a silver medal for Canada in the decathlon while the other three athletes (pictured) took part in the 4×100-metre relay squad and helped Canada to win gold.

These four individuals informed Athletics Canada that they did not want to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to the fast turnaround time as they felt that they needed more rest and time to fully recover. The tight schedule and turnaround time between the World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games has made it difficult for those athletes who competed in final week at the World Athletics Championships to make the flight to England and be ready to compete.

Athletics Canada Supports Athletes Decision To Pull Out

Athletics Canada supported the decision of all four athletes saying they competed in hot conditions in Oregon and needed the extra rest to fully recover. Due to this decision, Canada will now only have two athletes who have won gold medals at the World Athletics Championships represent the country at the Commonwealth Games.

Brendon Rodney who was the fourth member of the relay team that won the gold medal says he is fit enough to compete at the Commonwealth Games and so is Camryn Rogers who picked up a silver medal for the hammer throw!
