Shea Weber was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday, headlining the 2024 class that also featured fellow player honorees Pavel Datsyuk, Jeremy Roenick, Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell.
Additionally, David Poile and Colin Campbell entered as “builders” for their contributions to the game beyond the ice.
Weber’s career, cut short by persistent injuries, came to a halt after he led the underdog Montreal Canadiens to the 2021 Stanley Cup final.
My love for the game remains strong, Even if my body didn’t hold up as long as I had hoped.
The 39-year-old from Sicamous, B.C., amassed 589 points in 1,038 NHL games with the Canadiens and Nashville Predators, plus 42 points across 97 playoff appearances.
Reflecting on his career, Weber shared,
There’s so much to be grateful for when playing this game. And it’s not just the big moments, grinding out a playoff win or taking home Olympic gold. It’s in the small — seemingly routine — moments that matter the most.
He also mentioned the importance of the
Friendships built during countless plane and bus rides, team dinners, breaking things down in the trainer’s room.
Datsyuk: “Being Inducted Into the Hockey Hall of Fame Is a Tremendous Honour”
Former Detroit Red Wings star Datsyuk was also inducted in his first year of eligibility. Ahead of the ceremony, several NHL players reflect on his remarkable offensive talent.
Known for his finesse and sportsmanship, the 46-year-old Russian center recorded 918 points in 953 games and added 113 points in 157 playoff games, contributing to Detroit’s Stanley Cup wins in 2002 and 2008.
A four-time Lady Byng Trophy winner and three-time Selke Trophy recipient, Datsyuk said,
Being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame is a tremendous honour…[an] honour I couldn’t even dream of.
Roenick Got the Call After 12 Years
Boston-born winger Roenick (54) scored 1,216 points over 1,363 games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks.
Despite also contributing 122 points (53 goals, 69 assists) in 154 playoff games and scooping up silver at the 2002 Olympics, he had to wait 12 years for his Hall of Fame call.
I love this game, It’s been such a huge part of my life for most of my life.
Wendell and Darwitz, both U.S. Olympians, celebrated the relationships they built through hockey.
The greatest thing about hockey was not winning championships or medals, but the people that I got to meet along the way.
In the builder category, former professional ice hockey defenceman, coach, and current influential NHL executive Campbell, and retired ice hockey executive and former player Poile, were honored.
Polie kickstarted his career as an NHL executive with the Atlanta and Calgary Flames in the 1970s prior to becoming general manager of the Washington Capitals in 1982.
He also traded Weber to Montreal for P.K. Subban in 2016. Commenting on his induction, Polie said that he had poured his “heart and soul into the game”, but that the sport has given him and his family a lot more in return.
