Team Canada named their 22 member roster last week for the 2023 World Junior Championship and have now confirmed that Shane Wright will be their captain during the tournament.

The 2023 World Junior Championship takes place from Dec 26 to Jan 5 and will be held across Moncton and Halifax.

Shane Wright To Lead Team Canada

Shane Wright who plays for the Seattle Kraken got the nod from coach Dennis Williams to lead Team Canada at the World Juniors. Williams made the announcement after assembling the team during a practice session and also announce his four assistants who will wear the (A) to support Wright during each game.

Hockey Canada made the decision to loan Wright to Team Canada for the World Junior Championships. By coincidence, Wright ended up flying on the same flight from America to Canada with Coach Williams. The two of them had a long conversation during the flight and it helped Williams make a decision on who he wanted to entrust with the leadership.

Wright has benefitted significantly from his stint with Seattle Kraken as he learnt a lot from players like Alex Wennberg, Adam Larsson and Yanni Gourde. Williams felt that Wright had a maturity about him and also the necessary experience as a captain as Wright was the captain in 2021 for the under-18 World Championship in Texas.

There are 12 members from the under-18 World Championship in Texas that are part of Team Canada for the 2023 World Junior Championship and will be used to Wright’s leadership. His four assistants will be Dylan Guenther (NHL), Logan Stankoven (WHL Kamloops Blazers), Nathan Gaucher (QMJHL) and Ethan Del Mastro (OHL).

Wright Prefers To Lead By Example

After Williams made the announcement, members of Team Canada called on the new captain to give a speech and he obliged with a very short one! Wright said that there were a number of players on the team who could have been named captain. He was grateful for the honour to captain Team Canada and said he liked how the team bonded during the last couple of weeks.

Wright said he preferred to lead by example and push his team mates to enjoy themselves while they play and stay focused on the what they wanted to achieve as a hockey team.
