Canada Losses to Argentina 2-0 in the Copa America Semifinal

Lionel Messi Scores against Canada in Copa America 2024 Semi Final

Summary:

  • Canada lost to Argentina score 2-0 in the Copa America semi-final at the MetLife Stadium.
  • Lionel Messi and Jualain Alvarez scored for the South American side.
  • Argentina will meet No. 12 Colombia or No. 14 Uruguay, decided by Sunday’s championship game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Canada lost the Copa America semi-final to Lionel Messi’s Argentina on Tuesday evening at the MetLife Stadium.

Gutsy Performance from Canada

The 48th-ranked Canadians were defeated by goals from Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez, who lifted the star-studded side past them.

Nonetheless, despite the loss, the Canadians did not disappoint the loud crowd of 80,102 people gathered to watch both teams play on the scorching and humid night at the stadium that is the home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets.

The stadium has also been selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Despite the lively crowd being predominantly clad in Argentina blue, pockets of red were also visible. They all witnessed a gutsy performance from the Canadians, despite the lack of finishing goals.

Argentina once again proved its skill and class and showed passing and buildup similar to what you would watch in a video game.

The Canadians suffered a similar 2-0 defeat against the Argentinians on June 20 when they met in Atlanta for the tournament opener.

The only other time the two teams met was in May 2010, when Argentina crushed Canada with a 5-0 score in Buenos Aires in their last warm-up before the FIFA World Cup that was held in South Africa.

“We Need to Regroup and Go for Third Place.”

Canada is getting ready to head to Charlotte for Saturday’s game that will decide the third place at the Bank of America Stadium.

Commenting on their loss, goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was convinced they could have done better.

Even though they are the world champions, everybody on the field feels like we could have done better. We need to regroup and go for third place.

Crepeau added that, as a national team that is constantly gaining ranking spots and getting ready for 2026, they must “dig deeper than that”.

Messi’s Argentina will meet No. 12 Colombia or No. 14 Uruguay next. The two teams will play the Copa America Final on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C., at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
