Canada celebrate beating Sweden at the quarter-finals of the 2022 IIHF women's world championship

Summary

  • Canada ran through Sweden 3-0 to reach semi-finals
  • Canada will play Switzerland on 03 Sep
  • Canadian women’s team looking to bring positive image to Hockey Canada

Canada took on Switzerland in the quarter finals of the Women’s World Hockey Championship on 01 September.

This was the first time since 2009 that the two teams have met in a world championship game. Fans expected a close match between the two sides but Canada ran away with the game quickly.

Canada Defeats Sweden 3-0

There was a lot at stake for both teams as the winner moved on to the semi-finals. While Sweden gave it their best, Canada proved to be too strong in both their offensive and defensive game and ended up winning 3-0. Sarah Potomak was one of the star performers for Team Canada as she scored a goal and also contributed an assist that led to another goal.

Credit must be given to Troy Ryan, head coach of Canada’s women’s hockey team as he rotated his forwards putting Victoria Bach along with Brianne Jenner and Marie-Philip Poulin. He also brought on Sarah Nurse and let her play along with Emily Clark and Sarah Fillier. Ann-Renee Desbiens did well for Canada in the goal putting together 9 saves that left Sweden scoreless.

Blayre Turnbull, vice-captain for Canada said that they were really happy with the way they played as a team against Sweden. Turnbull said the players had to show a lot of patience and discipline to stick to the game plan and finish strong.

Canada Set To Play Switzerland In Semi-Finals

The next team for Canada will be a semi-final clash against Switzerland which takes place on 03. Canada will be confident going into this game as they do have a lot of momentum going for them as they target another final after winning at the Winter Olympics earlier this year but they will not take Switzerland lightly.

Canada’s women’s hockey team will be very keen on going all the way to the final and finishing with the championship. Hockey Canada which runs all forms of hockey in Canada has faced a lot of criticism in the media recently for trying to cover up a sexual misconduct charge

Canadians have expressed disappointment with Hockey Canada and have said they are concerned about having their children play hockey. While Hockey Canada has promised to clean up its image, the women’s team winning the World Hockey Championship will help boost the popularity of hockey in Canada.
