Betting Previews & Tips for Nov 27 - World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup 2022

On Sunday, there’s yet another feast for football fans across the world. Another eight teams will get down to business in Qatar, as the FIFA World Cup brings us four games to enjoy.

This time, there will be action from Group E and Group F at stadiums in Doha, Al Rayyan and Al Khor.

After their surprise win against the Germans, the Japanese will look to continue building momentum against the Costa Ricans, who will be low on confidence after the hammering they took from Spain. Germany must bounce back if they’re to stand any chance of being eliminated in the group stages for the second World Cup in a row, but they face a Spanish team that looked in seriously good form on match-day one.

In Group F, both Croatia and Canada search for not only their first win of the tournament but their first goals. It was a timid effort from the finalist of 2018, as they failed to find a route to the goal against Morocco on match-day one, while the Canadians were hugely guilty of poor finishing. Can either improve. In the other game, Belgium will look to make it two wins from two after getting away with some poor defending the first time out, while the Moroccans will look to take advantage of what is an ageing Belgian side.

Japan vs Costa Rica

Odds:

  • Japan 1.44
  • Costa Rica 8.00
  • Draw 4.50

First up on Sunday, Japan takes on Costa Rica in an early kick-off at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

Few people expected the Japanese to turn over the Germans on match-day one, but the team known as the Samurai Blue certainly sliced through their opponents with some devastating attacks. Sure, they rode their luck at times, but in general, there was lots to like about how Japan harried, pressed and went forward with a serious purpose.

Little was expected of the Costa Ricans, even if they were up against a relatively young-looking Spanish team, and they certainly delivered little as they sat back and almost surrendered from the first whistle. Things get easier here, but not much, as they’re now up against a Japanese side that presses high and carries no shortage of attacking threat.

This is most certainly Japan’s game for the taking. The Costa Ricans can certainly do better than they did against Spain, and they’re likely to have more of a go here, but that should play into the hands of the Japanese, who really can be dangerous on the break.

Prior to the World Cup, Hajime Moriyasu’s men beat both the USA and South Korea, scoring five and conceding none in the process. Such form points towards them thriving here. Especially since the Costa Ricans struggled to cling on to a draw against South Korea in September.

Another eye-catching bet is ‘Daichi Kamada to Score Anytime’ the dynamic attack-minded midfielder has thrived in his more advanced role at Frankfurt this season, scoring seven goals in 13 Bundesliga fixtures. He also took up some excellent positions behind Daizen Maeda against Germany. The 26-year-old, who this season averages 0.66 goals per game at the club level, looks like a key player for Japan in attack, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was the one to unlock what is a rather weak opposing Costa Rican rear guard.

Betting Tips:

Score Prediction: Japan 2-0 Costa Rica

Japan to Win & Over 1.5 Goals @ 1.90

Daichi Kamada to Score @ 3.75

Belgium vs Morocco

Odds:

  • Belgium 1.91
  • Morocco 4.10
  • Draw 3.50

The second game on Sunday is Belgium vs Morocco at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

This is a massive game for both teams. For Belgium, they need to put in a performance and prove that they can do much better than their lucky win against Canada, while Morocco need to avoid defeat and keep their hopes of qualifying alive ahead of match-day three.

Belgium did put three points on the board last time out, and they did keep a clean sheet, but realistically, they looked all over the place, so much so that a more clinical and decisive team than Canada would’ve won with ease. There’s real concern over their lack of pace at the back, while the team generally looked disjointed and out of sorts. Perhaps not surprising, given that they lost to both the Netherlands and Egypt prior to kicking off in Qatar.

For Morocco, it wasn’t a bad start. The North Africans looked strong in possession against Croatia, while they didn’t come under too much pressure at the back, which was a testament to how they stopped opposing attacks before they became serious.

In the betting, a case can certainly be made for Morocco at 4.10. Their back-line looked rigid and disciplined against Croatia, and we know that they’ve got lots of attacking talent with Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En Nesyri and Sofiane Boufal, all of whom play in Europe’s top leagues, in their ranks.

Moreover, the Moroccans came into this tournament without a defeat in eight games. They kept a clean sheet in six of those eight, and we saw little against Croatia to suggest that they’ll all of a sudden become easy to face. Considering this in conjunction with how out of form Belgium looked, 2.88 on ‘Morocco Draw No Bet’ looks tasty.

Betting Tips:

Morocco Draw No Bet @ 2.88

Score Prediction: Belgium 0-1 Morocco

Croatia vs Canada

Odds:

  • Croatia 2.10
  • Canada 3.60
  • Draw 3.40

Onto to Croatia vs Canada, which will take place at Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar’s capital city of Doha.

For the Croats, match-day one wasn’t great. In fact, it was quite underwhelming from their perspective. They didn’t play terribly, but for a few worrying moments, they kept their opponents relatively quiet, while they did create a few half-chances, but overall, they never really got going, which is a bit worrying.

In contrast, Canada came flying out of the gates and started their game against Belgium at a ferocious pace. In truth, the Red Devils looked shell-shocked, and they were simply unable to withstand the early Canadian pressure. In impressive fashion, John Herdman’s men launched wave after wave of attack. There was only one problem, they couldn’t apply the finish!

This is an interesting game, as we’re likely to see contrasting styles. Canada, especially after losing the first game, will continue to play on the front foot. They’ll press, and they’ll get forward at every opportunity. Croatia, on the other hand, are likely to be far more measured in their approach. They’ll keep things ticking over and either look to pounce on the break or rely on the brilliance of Luka Modric to make something happen.

If the Canadians had shown more in the way of end-product against Belgium, you’d probably take a chance at 3.60, their lack of genuine final-third quality is an issue. If we consider that the Croats have been here and done it before, they’re not easy to look beyond for this one. After all, they’ve got plenty of tournament nous, so a relatively low-scoring win for the 2018 finalists appeals.

Interestingly, before the World Cup, Croatia won five on the bounce, conceding just two goals in the process. In four of those five games, less than four goals went in.

Betting Tips:

Score Prediction: Croatia 2-1 Canada

Croatia to Win & Under 3.5 Goals @ 2.80

Spain vs Germany

Odds:

  • Spain 2.30
  • Germany 3.00
  • Draw 3.50

Last but certainly not least, it’s a mammoth clash between Spain and Germany at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

It was incredibly hard not to be impressed with the way in which the Spanish went about their business against Costa Rica. Sure, they were up against clearly inferior opposition, but they were unrelenting in their pressure, and let’s face it, we’ve seen other big teams falter against seemingly lesser teams, so they still had to get the job done, and boy, did they do that.

Unlike their European counterparts, the Germans did not impress. In fact, they were rather poor all round. Yes, they created some chances, and yes, they could’ve scored a few more goals, but in terms of both end-product and final-third decision-making, they really were awful, and the less said about their defending, the better.

After we saw what we saw a few days ago, Spain are natural favourites for this game, but they still look rather generously priced at 2.30.

At the end of the day, even though Germany disappointed, both teams have the individual quality to do some damage here, but it’s the Spanish who look to have the more cohesive unit right now, and that, along with their extra ability to be clinical in the final third makes them a decent bet here.

In addition, ‘Spain to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ catches the eye. The Germans must go for this, and even if they didn’t, their back-line doesn’t look strong; at least it was full of holes against Japan. Luis Enrique’s men arrived at the World Cup off the back of notching three in their warm-up game, while their attack certainly played themselves into form last time out. Against a desperate German side, the slick Spanish are backed to once again enjoy themselves offensively.

Betting Tips:

Score Prediction: Spain 3-1 Germany

Spain to Win @ 2.30

Spain to Score Over 1.5 Goals @ 2.10
