Zverev, Federer and del Potro Win at Shanghai Masters

Roger Federer taps his racket towards the crowd after beating Daniil Medvedev to advance to the next round in Shanghai

The Shanghai Masters saw the tour’s top players all having challenges in the lead up to the final day. Alexander Zverev and Juan Martin del Potro had to overcome being sick, and Rodger Federer had to battle back from losing the second set after winning the first.

Zverev, del Potro and Federer each managed to come out on top to advance to the next stage Wednesday at the Shanghai Masters in Qizhong Forest Sports City Aren, Shanghai.

Roger Federer is the defending champion and faced an uphill battle in his match against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev. After winning the first set 6-4, Federer fell to the Russian 4-6 in the second set and fought a tough battle in the third, but after breaking Medvedev’s service, Federer won 6-4 and advanced.

Federer stated that he took chances and mixed things up with his volleys and second serve. While speaking to reporters after the match, Federer added,

“In the third set I really started to figure it out, as well, how aggressive or how tactical I wanted to make the match. And by trying everything, I found a solution at the end, which was a great feeling to have.”

Juan del Porto, who is battling a cold was behind in the first set and faced a tiebreaker in the second against Richard Gasquet. After rebounding to win the first set 7-5, del Porto pulled off a late game tiebreaker to win the second 7-6(7). Commenting on the day’s struggles, del Potro said,

“It wasn’t easy to play for me today, I did what I can. I didn’t run too much. But I think I played with all my strength in the important moment of the match. I would love to feel better and I have been talking with the doctors every day.”

Fourth seeded Alexander Zverev also is battling a colf but managed to successful beat Nicoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 6-4. Basilashvili was successful in winning his match against del Potro at the China Open last week. It was his second career title, but his loss to Zverev brings an end to his competition in Shanghai.

Zvereve spoke about the match saying he played against an opponent that showed a lot of confidence adding,

“Obviously he’s playing the best tennis of his life, winning in Beijing, and obviously he had a very good match yesterday, as well. He knows how to play, definitely. Probably the hardest-hitting player I have ever played against.”

Zverev’s coach is absent in Shanghai due to having to have wrist surgery in the United States. The injury said Zvereve was a result of excessive playing of golf. However, it is expected that his coach, Ivan Lendl will return before the end of this season.

Also advancing is Stefanos Tsitsipas who defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6 (8). This is the second straight year that Khachanov was unsuccessful against Tsitsipas in Shanghai. Commenting, Tsitsipas said,

“We played here last year and it was the place I got my first ATP win. I knew today was going to be a different match. I played every single point as if there was no tomorrow.”
