The National Hockey League (NHL) announced this week that they have plans to host the World Cup of Hockey in 2024.

The last time the World Cup of Hockey took place was back in 2016 and Canada ended up winning the World Cup.

World Cup of Hockey – 4th Edition In 2024

The World Cup in popular sports like soccer and cricket tend to take place once every four years. Things are different in the NHL as the World Cup of Hockey has taken place thrice in the last three decades.

The World Cup of Hockey was launched in 1996 when Philadelphia and Montreal shared hosting rights. The United States was dominant in the inaugural World Cup of Hockey and won the championship. 

The second edition of the World Cup of Hockey took place in Toronto in 2004 and Canada ended up winning on home soil. The last and third edition of the World Cup of Hockey took place in 2016 and Toronto once again hosted the World Cup and Canada ended up winning the World Cup yet again.

Canada will be keen to defend its World Cup championship in 2024. The World Cup is usually decided in a best of three series. It appears that the 2024 edition will have a total of 10 teams with 2 teams getting eliminated during the qualifying rounds to bring it to 8 teams as usual.

There is uncertainty on whether Russia will be able to take part in the 2024 World Cup due to the sanctions imposed on the Russian hockey team due to Russia’s war with Ukraine. 

Europe and North America To Share Hosting Rights

Bill Daly, deputy commissioner for the NHL said that league along with the NHL Players Association (NHLPA) were very serious about going forward with the 2024 World Cup of Hockey and were already have regular meeting to discuss their plans going forward.

Europe and North America will share hosting duties during the 2024 World Cup. The plan is to have a preliminary round pool in Europe and North America and one pool in Europe.
