Jets Suffer Second Straight OT Loss After 2-1 Sharks Defeat

Michael Misa scores overtime winner against the Winnipeg Jets during 2025 NHL Season

Summary:

  • Michael Misa scored 1:40 into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.
  • Winnipeg has dropped four of its last five, including back-to-back overtime losses.
  • The Sharks have now won two straight after a five-game losing streak.

After dropping five in a row earlier in the week, the San Jose Sharks showed sudden signs of life with back-to-back wins in the NHL. Their latest is a hard-fought 2-1 overtime victory against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night.

The loss marked Winnipeg’s fourth in five games and their second straight in extra time.

Winnipeg Pushed for a Winner

The game didn’t take long to find its hero, as, just 1:40 into overtime, rookie Michael Misa carried the puck down the middle, cut through the slot, and beat Connor Hellebuyck cleanly.

This was Misa’s second straight game with a goal and his fourth of the season, which is not bad for the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft.

Will Smith had the other goal for San Jose, tying the game early in the third period. His 18th of the season came just 1:47 into the frame and was set up by Macklin Celebrini, who picked up his team-leading 54th assist on the play. Smith’s finish shifted the momentum after Winnipeg controlled long stretches of the opening period.

Alex Nedeljkovic did his part in the net, stopping 27 shots. He was especially steady late, when the Jets pushed for a winner before overtime.

Winnipeg struck first. Morgan Barron opened the scoring just 2:44 into the game, beating Nedeljkovic from the left circle. It was Barron’s first goal since December 21 and his eighth of the season. At that point, it looked like the Jets might settle in and control the pace.

Instead, they found themselves in another tight finish. Hellebuyck, who made 31 saves, couldn’t stop Misa’s clean look in overtime. The Jets also fell 5-4 in overtime to Anaheim on Friday, in Hellebuyck’s first outing since helping the United States win Olympic gold.

For San Jose, the mood has shifted quickly. Two wins do not erase the earlier skid, but they do offer something the Sharks have not had much of lately: momentum.

Both teams are back at home Tuesday night, when Winnipeg will host the Chicago Blackhawks, while San Jose will welcome the Montreal Canadiens.
